Another stone?

Farley had his bladder stone surgery around a month ago. A week or two after the surgery, we noticed his pee was a bit pink. We took him to the vet, and the vet said he was fine. He took x rays and nothing came up. A few weeks later, tonight, I noticed he was squealing while he was peeing which was a major red flag. He was fine a few hours ago, happy taking food . Tonight he nibbled a bit of lettuce but overall seemed uninterested. I fear it might be another stone. I’m not sure what will happen if it is, I feel as if we got lucky with the surgery the first time. We have scheduled an appointment with the vet for tomorrow afternoon.

It could be a UTI? I’m not sure. It is possible that it can be a stone again since I have heard of piggies getting stones again after they had one a month or two later. UTI’s usually are a case too though.

Calcium absorption is a complex process; depending on what is going wrong that has caused the stones, more can form within weeks of an operation.

Please also make sure that you adjust the diet to a balanced low calcium one, switch to 1 tablespoon daily of low/no added calcium and ideally timothy based pellets and only give filtered or bottled low calcium water. The two latter food groups are usually where most of the calcium comes in but that many people completely overlook. Diet can help quite a ot towards slowing down bladder issues or preventing them completely but depending on what has gone wrong with the calcium absorption, it may take some time to rebalance again.

In addition to any vet care, we recommend to give glucosamine based cystease (a cat food bladder supplement; they are the other species prone to bladder problems) or vegan glucosamine daily in order to support the natural glucosamine coating of the bladder walls in guinea pigs with recurring bladder problems or in bladder stone piggies.

Sending you hugs and healing vibes to Farley, I hope you get good news at the vet tomorrow and this is something that can be easil sorted. My Bracken is also a month post stone op. our vet has told us to do everyhing as Wiebke has said above, (we did anyway as we have had past stone piggies), one extra thing she told me to do for the coming months to be reviewed later is to syringe 10mls of water twice daily to make sure the bladder is flushed out well every day.
