hello all,

All of a sudden we have lots of Ants on the grass in the Piggys run, I've moved the run to different areas but they seem to be everywhere! Can not get rid of them! Every time I put some veg out the ants are all over it.

Any advice?

I've had the same problem but managed to find a clear spot further down the garden. Also had an earwig nest in the run hut, pesky things there were hundreds of them. Tipped and brushed them out at the bottom of the garden. Don't know what to suggest about your ants though, hope someone will come along soon with an idea.

Thanks :)
Oh Kufhorn that's interesting ... Will add the cucumber and see if that helps.

Not sure if it effects the pigs having the ants there but I don't like seeing them crawl all over the veg, don't want to feed veg upstairs in the pigs bedroom as then they prob wouldn't want to come down!

Maybe place a bowl or pieces of ant friendly veg outside of the run, and put the piggies fresh veg in bowls inside the run?

@Sue, you don't say whether the ants are black or red. I am guessing they are black. I have put the runs down on an ant nest a couple of times, and I don't like seeing them crawling all over the piggies shelters. But honestly, they don't seem to bother the piggies and the piggies are not bothered by the ants. If it is just the piggie's veg that they are after, then I would just feed the veg indoors. My piggies just have hay cubes and pellets to eat when outside.

Thanks for all your replies I love this forum!

Yes they are standard black ones @7squeakers. It is just my dislike for them, the Piggys aren't bothered at all.
Will try veg in bowl :)

Would the Piggys be okay on just grass, hay and pellets as they live out 24/7 now as we are in 'summer'?

@Sue so your piggies are outside all the time and the ants are getting into the hutch, right? If they are indeed after the veg, putting it in a bowl will not help much. Ants can climb up just about anything. I think it is just that time of year when the ant nests erupt as the queens fly away. You need an ant trap. You put a drop of poison inside it and the exploring ants take it back to the queen. The queen eats it and stops laying eggs. End of colony.

Ants are purely on the veg, we haven't had any up in the actual hutch.

After me writing all of this, boyfriend has just come home with two ant traps! ! Hopefully the end of colony is upon us! Thanks for all the advice :)

I need some ant traps, apparently my mum has found 3 red ants nests in our lawn today. Bloody things get everywhere, massive problems with slugs this year as well

Just find the source of the nest &pour kettle full of boiling water over the ants &nest. Not a nice way to go but doesn't involve harmful chemicals that could harm the piggies &get into the food chain. Kills the eggs &queen too.

Apparently if u use a complete/solid white line ants dont like it either. A line of flour or talcum powder or even a line of toothpaste is supposed to work !
They won't cross the line if they have to fight their way through it.

Oh &I use dried &crushed eggshells round plants to stop slugs &snails. Sprinkle the crushed egg shell pieces around the stems for about 2inches &its too pointy and sharp for them to travel over. Or copper strips round the tops of plant pots is an eco friendly method too :)
