Hi,

Daffodill is around 7 years old and has an upper respiratory infection. I am nebulising her twice a day with F10. I wanted anti-biotics to back up the nebulising, but vet was reluctant to give them untill we have tried the F10 first. I asked for Baytril. Now, the nebulising is helping to open Dilly's airways and she is less rattly after a session, but it doesn't last. I really feel that she needs anti-biotics, but don't want to argue the point with the vet until I know what she can have. So, can some-one tell me which anti-biotics would be most suited for an upper respiratory infection, please ? Thanks.

Hi. I am sorry to hear that Daffodill is unwell. I am not clued up with URI's but know a few people who were prescribed Baytil. From past experience, you know your pig the best and I really think you should discuss any concerns that you have with your vet.
(((hugs))) xx

Welcome to the forum, bigwig, I am sorry Daffodill is not well.

Baytril is the most common antibiotic prescribed, but Zithromax (azithromycin) is also said to be good for respiratory infections.

Whether Zithromax or Baytril can be used with the F10 I have no idea, I don't know enough about nebulising with F10 to say.

I think AP's question leads onto whether her symptoms can be attributed to another conditon such as heart defect or allergy. Respiratory infections are often diagnosed as the cause of symptoms, rather than the symptoms being caused by a different problem. Nobody is doubting the diagnosis, just ensuring that other conditions with the same URI symptoms can be ruled out before treatment ideas and experiences can be put forward.

Treatment with a nebuliser in place of an antibiotic is very uncommon, but as I said I know so little about F10 I wouldn't know if it is preferable to, or can be used alongside, antibiotics.
