I think that i have read on this site before now that you can give your piggies human medicine?
Is this correct?

One of my four have developed what seems like a sore throat? But she is completely fine and normal in behaviour, but she is, what sounds like "grunting"? :{

The vets aren't open today so i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions?

Thanks xx

i wouldnt give medication with out knowing the exact issue or without a vet visit,have you got an after hours clinic?if not i would book in as soon as they reopen x

Is she eating and drinking?

There are products you can give your pig that can be used on humans but as Bonnie said wait until you have seen the vet. There may be no need at all to give meds.

Do hope she is ok. :)

Do not under any circumstances give your guinea pig any human medicine unless under the guidance of your vet. Guinea pigs don't get "sore throats" and the symptoms you're describing could be something simple or something more sinister (grunting/hooting can be a sign of heart problems though this is fairly rare).

I agree, trip to the vet asap.

Although many antibiotics have been tested on Guinea Pigs, (hence the expression), this doesnt make them safe for Piggie administration. Most human antibiotics are extremely toxic to GPS so steer clear until you can get a vets diagnosis.(More info on this can be found on the Guinea Pig Lynx Pages) If your piggie is in pain, perhaps some baby calpol would help until you get to the vets. Good luck. Its so worrying when a piggie is ill and I know you just want to make him/her better. Keep us up to date on how you get on.

She is absolutely fine, eating LOTS and drinking as normal which suggests to me that she isn't in pain :{

I weigh them every Monday so i shall see how the weigh-in goes tomorrow.

I had never heard this noise before which is why i was a little concerned.

I will make an appointment with the vet anyway just to make sure that she is ok.

Sorry if i worried anyone about the human medication thing, i wasn't going to give her anything i was just wondering if what i had read somewhere was correct in all honesty :)

Thanks xx

That what so good about the forum. No matter what the problem, there are lots of people who can offer advice and feedback on similar problems. I have found this forum to be so helpful in all aspects of piggie care and its great to build up your knowledge of GP health. Keep us up to date on your piggies progress.
