Hi Zigg goes into stasis with baytril unfortunately she has been ill enough that we needed something quick. So this is her second course of baytril in 2 weeks. I’m struggling to keep her pooping. I’ve upoed the emeprid but this afternoon there have been few poops. I’m tempted to ask to switch to sulfatrim.

Her breathing is looking good at the moment. She has had 3 days of baytril out of 9. Do I ask to leave a day between antibiotics? Do is ask to switch. The vet I saw today admitted we would probably only make it to 6 days of baytril max and I was to take a view at that point. I don’t think I want to go that far.

I would speak to them about switching sooner if she is reacting badly. I have had pigs in the past where they had a note on their records at the vets not to give Baytril. Your vet could also look at Zithromax if it is for a respiratory infection. They could also add in a second gut stimulant. Are you giving probiotics?

I was thinking zantac but if she is already on that am not sure. May be the vet could change the dose? You could also put her on something that vibrates.

Thank you, I’ve been back to the vets again today as she hadn’t pooped for 7 hours. They said stop the baytril but I’m not happy to just do that after 3 days of it. I’m going to call them tomorrow and ask about switching to something else.

How is she doing? x

We are still battling, she is still on the baytril, we are keeping her going with 1ml emeprid 4 times a day, bio lapis and massage and syringe feeding.

In herself she is much better than she was but I can still hear a slight whistle when she sniffs but she is eating and playing but if I reduce the emeprid we go to no poop.

keep up with the emeprid, it will not harm, we had a piggy on emeprid and zantac for ages.... Gut stims are amazing drugs, utter life savers.

Sending her lots of love and vibes, she is in the safest most caring hands with you

Have you tried using infacol? We gave that (along with emeprid and zantac) to Bunny when she was still alive whenever she had stomach problems (she was prone to gas and paste like poops). Infacol is used to treat colic for babies. I think it won't be harmful. I just can't remember the dosage.

Thank you, yes I’ve upped the emeprid again, sleepless night and we have poops. Last night was her last baytril so we will see how it goes. I hate baytril. She is up and about playing so that’s ok. I have a day off so I’m about to get dressed and collect her meds from the vets.

Thank you for the vote of confidence. After the year we have had I sometimes feel utterly useless and incapable. It’s almost the anniversary of losing Dozy to cancer.

Yes we have added that too, Zigg came to us last September on deaths door with a URI, I nursed her back to health (along with her sister). But we discovered that baytril is really tricky with her. Her guts just shut down each time. This time she was admitted to the vets with the URI very ill 4 days after a URI had killed one of my other pigs, so it’s been a balance between stopping the URI from killing her (so giving a fast acting antibiotic) and stopping the antibiotics from killing her.

You are a really caring owner, I have said this is the past. You have just gone through a bad time and it will hit confidence. Your piggies are lucky to have you. Sending lots of healing vibe x

Today I went to collect more emeprid and Zantac to be quizzed by a vet nurse as to why I thought I needed it. I explained that without it we have no poop on 3 ml a day we have no poop and we always react to baytril. She said well no more without seeing a vet, i explained today was the last day of the course of baytril if she wasn’t pooping on her own by Monday I would be back banging the door down! She is flying around like a loon and is pooping right now so all is ok.

Stick to your guns and speak to a vet, you know your piggies and probably have more experience than the nurse when it comes to cavies. Baytril does upset tums sometimes and gut stims keep systems working. I would imagine your vet will have an issue. Always worth arranging an apt with a vet in advance if it is difficult getting apts so you can ensure unit erupted coverage if needed. But I am sure you have this all under control.

Cisapride does work on the hind gut. My Jon Snow has it daily as he has absorption issues.

We get it in liquid form from the vet. It is ludicrously expensive though...

I was 99% sure I was right  Yes, it is very expensive. I got some for Willow too...she was on a very small dose...0.1 ml
