Hi, my guinea pig Hetty (5 months old) had a mild Uri mid-may. She was started on baytril but lost appetite and became lethargic, septrin caused a increased heart rate and then finally Zithromax. She went into gut stasis and was injected with fluids, taken off the antibiotics and given zantec and fibreplex. This was about 4 weeks ago. She still has intermittent diarrhoea, some days formed poos but soft, others more normal. For the last two weeks she has been on pro-kolin and on reduced veg- just a bit of pepper and parsley for her vitamin c intake. In her self she is lively, happy, eating her nuggets and hay down but just wondered if anyone else has had prolonged problems after antibiotic use? How long could this last? Could damage be permanent? My vets seem very relaxed about it as she is so well in herself, still gaining weight (around 20g a week). Any advice would be appreciated. Thankyou.

Hi,

Are you sure its pro-kolin? This is to reduce diarrohea in carnivores and shouldnt be used in piggies? It contains meat products, which a piggy cannot process.

If you mean a different, herbivore suitable product from that range then that would be okay! All i can suggest is trying her off veg for a while, and increase probiotics i.e add in another like avipro plus, dosed at 1/3-1/2 scoop usually- i find this brand particularly effective x

It's definitely pro kolin, have seen on here that others have used it in guinea pigs. Just concerned as to how long it will take to fix for her. As I say the diarrhoea isn't every day. Has been today, the last time was 5 days ago. No pattern whatsoever.

She's been on it now for around 12 days and still very hit and miss. Does it just take time?

Scared there could be some permanent damage but then she is absolutely fine in all other ways.
