Hi guys,
I’m hoping you can help me please. I’ve had guinea pigs all my life but after a break for about 5 years, I now have 2 handsome boars.
Yogi has been snuffly since Friday. I got him a vets appointment this morning and he thinks he’s sniffed something up his nose that’s got stuck and infected. He said his lungs sound fine so that’s the most likely thing. He’s given him an antibiotic shot and then prescribed 10 days of Baytril for him. 0.6 mls 2 times a day. I was so busy comforting Yoges and listening to what was wrong and what I needed to do, that when my partner asked me when he needs his first dose, I couldn’t tell him! I don’t want to give him it sooner than he needs it, but don’t want to leave it! Any ideas how long please. Should it be tonight, or tomorrow morning? I could kick myself! Obviously they’re shut now so I can’t check. TIA.

Does your vets have an emergency vet at their centre or are they linked to another centre? If they have the out of hours service at theirs they may share a system and you may be able to get advice on when to give the next dose. You could always call the out of hours service for advice.

I don't know how long the injections last so tagging in some more experienced members @Abi_nurse @Wiebke @furryfriends (TEAS)

I've also moved this to the health and illness section where some members have alerts set up to be able to help

I’m sorry. I realised I’d put it in the wrong place. Don’t know what’s up with me today! I’m not usually this scatty. Thanks for your help, and for tagging the relevant members, much appreciated @Lady Kelly

I’ve rung, and yes, tomorrow morning. Sorry guys. Don’t know why I didn’t think to call them myself. I’m honestly not as stupid as I’m coming across 😂🤦🏻‍♀️ It was just panic. I’ve lost a guinea pig to a UTI before and I can’t lose Yogi. Thank you.

We've all been there trust me! I remember asking a question when I first joined and everyone saying get to the vet and I just stared at it like "well that was the obvious thing to do" :))

Sometimes you just need the obvious pointing out to you :D Thanks again

Glad you got your answer! It's always been the following day for me too, but don't feel stupid for asking an apparently obvious question, the obvious isn't always so obvious when you're stressed/overthinking/in a panic. We've all been there.

HUGS!

It is all too easy not to think about things and be distracted when we are every upset and have everything disrupted by an emergency.

All the best for a good recovery!

Thank you @Wiebke and @Lorcan I couldn’t believe I’d not paid attention to such an important detail! He was so upset and making such a racket - they could hear him in the reception! - that I was just wanting to settle him. I appreciate your support and thank you for your good wishes - the vet said the snuffling should have pretty much gone by morning.

It is very easy to do; you are not the first and not the last who can't think straight, so please don't feel upset or guilty, Just get on with getting your boy through this! Instead of tearing yourself apart, concentrate on sending your boy calm healing energy whenever you feel that your emotions are getting the better of you. Or do a little meditation if possible to centre and ground yourself again.

PS: If it is any consolation to you, many of us (me included) have forgotten important questions or have had to ring the clinic to clarify instructions when our brains turned to mush over our worries. ;)

Thank you. We’ve just had some cuddles and soothing nose strokes, then he was wheeking for his tea so I’ve left him tucking into a bowl of kale with his brother, Barney. He’s bright eyed and absolutely fine in himself, so I have every confidence he’ll be right as rain. Really appreciate your kindness and advice :)

@BearPigs I've heard the screams a piggy can make when there's a needle on the go (Comet temporarily deafened me with it, in fact), nobody will blame you for being frazzled at that point. And if it makes you feel any better, I joined the forum because I needed to ask if guinea pigs can drink from bowls. Mhmm yes I did, lol.

I hope he's doing a bit better today?

Ahhh, it’s funny what panicking can do to your brain!
@Lorcan Thanks. This morning he ran to greet me wheeking, but when I picked him out he is still snuffly. I added a little spot of orange juice to his meds and he took it all like an absolute angel! Then they had some apple slices as a treat and tucked into their greens. He’s bright and squeaky and interested in everything. Hopefully when I get home the snuffling will be better. Thank you all for the kind words and well wishes.

Yeah that sounds pretty much like how Comet was (bar the whole "taking meds like an angel" part, at least). It took a couple of days before the antibiotics really worked for him, but as long as he's still eating and drinking I wouldn't worry too much.

Thanks. He’s snuffly still but my OH thinks he sounds a lot better than he did. He wasn’t so great at medicine taking last night or this morning. He’s got on to me! But I’m bribing him with cucumber so hopefully he’ll start to associate that he gets his favourite snack after he’s had his meds. Fingers crossed.
