Hi all,

My boar Egbert had his neutering operation a few days ago. He is eating and drinking well and seems his usual self.

He has been given Baytril 0.66 dose per day as a precaution, which I kind of agree with as I don't want any infections getting in and causing trouble.
however I do feel its a large dose..

Anyway, just today I found a lot of wet poops in his cage, not diarrhea, and I am guessing its due to the anti biotics, and he needs some kind of pro biotic to balance him back again.

Trouble is I can't remember what pro biotic to use, and I can't get into town at the moment (weather is bad) to buy anything, nor are we recieving any post so internet buying is out of the question! I can get to the local shops, chemist and a local store, is there anything safe I can give him in the meantime to help him?
What do you guys think of the Baytril dosage, is it quite high?

thanks

0.6ml daily is fine. Not sure about alternative PB's if you can't get to shops, I would definitely search internet again, maybe have it delivered overnight to somewhere else that you could get to? Hope your pig is ok. xx

I know our vets don't prescribe antibiotics post neutering op so if he seems ill and you can't get probiotics I wouldn't risk it hon x

thanks for your replies.

I could try the poop soup :)) I have just read about that. He has two ladies waiting for him so I'm sure he would enjoy some poop soup from them lol!

Perhaps I should split the antibiotic into two halves, morning and evening?
then it would be less all in one go.

I will have a look and see what I can find on the internet anyway, and hope it can be delivered soon.

If he is still doing this and feeling ill I suppose I could stop using the antibiotics but then I get worried he'll get sick from an infection :(

Could you get vet advice before halving the AB dose. It may be that half the dose doesn't do the job it's meant to, and he needs it all in one go. It has probably been prescribed as a precaution against infection, which is often standard practice, so to be effective it needs to be given at the correct dose. 0.6ml is not high. Does your vet not have probiotics? Vets usually have an overnight delivery service to their surgeries of various stuff, so they would be able to order you some. xx

how many days ago did he have the neutering op?

does he have any swelling around the op sight? and if you feel with finger and thumb is there any small lump in the op sight?

Hiya,
Just to say I had 3 boys neutered and my very cavy savy vet had the biggest 2 (1.25kg and 1kg respectively) on 0.8 of Baytril twice a day. They have had abcesses after so we are keeping on top of it. the little boy (500g) was on 0.4ml twice daily and they are/were all on Metacalm for pain relief. I have not needed any probiotic with them they are on burgess nuggets which have probiotic in too so perhaps that is why. I would suggest cutting down on any wet veg (if you haven't already) but stick with the Baytril as abcesses are a concern in neutering. The Probiotic i have, just in case, is Avipro Plus, but you can use fiberplex as well there are others but I can't remeber! Poop soup is definately a good option, almost better that probiotics. Hope this helps?

Hiya, Where abouts are you? I have a whole think of fibreplex i don't need that I could try to send you but then if post is a problem might not be anymore use than ordering online!
