Ziggy (recurrent URI) was bouncy Monday and yesterday. Her last antibiotic was Monday night (one week course of baytril) she had gut stimulants on Saturday as she went into stasis (she is still a little bloaty but she seems always like that - that is another worry). Today she is depressed hiding away again so I went straight to the vets.

Her chest sounds clear - but she isn’t herself. So we debated gut stimulents and antibiotics and in the end I felt she was going downhill so I opted for both! They have given baytril - a 2 week course at apparently the max dose (0.2ml for a 400g pig). Thy wouldn’t consider doxycycline due to creating antibiotic resistance. I can either start it tonight or wait and see if the gut stimulants help. What do you think?

I would try the gut stimulants first and see how she is a few hours after that. They kick in quicker than the baytril, so you should see whether they make a difference. Start the baytril after that.

I have written a new guide on gut stasis and bloating: Bloat, Gi Stasis ( No Gut Movement) And Not Eating

Thank you - that was my instinct and what I said to the vet I would do. But taking her home and watching her bury herself in the hay between Jet and Biscuit led to panic setting in....

She is up and eating!

Good news but please keep a very close eye and continue to support feed as piggies need a large amount of fibre and it can be misleading when you see them eating to estimate how much they are really eating and whether it’s enough.

Thanks I’ve been feeding her for the past week. I will continue. I was more happy that they gut stimulants worked and she perked up. Hopefully we won’t need the antibiotics. I do however have to work out how to stop this happening again.

UPDATE: She is up and about this morning and back to her normal self - so I think it's tummy/bloat. I'm planning the following - anything wrong with this, any tips, anything else?

Keep syringe feeding small/often.
Few days fibreplex,
Few days biolapidis,
48 hours no veg (I'll need to take Jet out to feed him and may take Binky out too, Biscuit would benefit from no veg at the moment as she has overdone it).
Slowly introduce veg after this. No fruit at all (it's a small treat twice a week max - she was getting a small slice of orange for the vit c once a week). What veg should I introduce first?
Keep nebulising with f10 - just in case.

How long do I do these things?
