I recently posted another thread about my female guinea pig Ruby making a strange noise when going to the toilet; we took her to the vets and they told us that she had a suspected UTI and gave us some baytril and meloxidyl (bayril twice a day and meloxidyl once a day) we have been giving her these for 1 week now and unfortunately she is still making the same noise. Should I stop giving her the medicine now or not? I think the vet said it should 3-5 days to work but it has been 7 days now.

I would go back to the vets, it might just be a stubborn UTI which my jemima had and she had to have a further dose of antibiotics for a while. It might be that they can increase the dosage or try a different antibiotic that she might respond to better.

Thanks for your help, should I still be giving her the other medicine until she finishes it?

Yes I would finish the course unless the vet says otherwise. Is she on pain relief?

Just looked up Meloxidyl and that is pain relief so you are covered in that respect.

I agree with above, would speak to vets regarding Septrin it tends to work better for UTI's and then look at a scan just to rule our stones. Please keep us updated

We took Ruby back to the vets today and they gave her an ultrasound scan, thankfully there was no stone which is great news! We have been given some more baytril and she needs this twice a day for 3-4 weeks which will hopefully clear the infection :)

Glad to hear there is nothing else lurking in the background and I hope the increase in antibiotics does the trick for her

It's great to hear you have had an ultrasound done & it's clear. If Ruby doesn't improve, I would chat to the vet about either trying a different antibiotic or having a urine sample tested to see what infection is present or discussing the dose of the antibiotic she is already on; lots of vets start very low with Baytril & it's always worth checking this with them. There are other options out there for antibiotics if there's no improvement so keep on going :).

The other thing I would think about it a probiotic as she has been on ABs for a while now & also I would weigh daily while I have a poorly piggy to make sure they are keeping their weight on.

Best wishes to you & Ruby x
