Does any 1 know what the safest antimflamatory is that you can get over the counter thanks in advance

Can you not ask your vet for Metacam?

Also if this is due to imflammation of the bladder (I saw your post on another thread) you could speak to your vet about Cystease or Cystaid or even vegan Glucosamine, all of which coat the bladder wall and help inflammation.

You will get a better response to this if it's posted in the correct section (health and illness) but Helen is right Metacam is the best and usual painkiller/anitinflammatory for most small animals and can be given safely in the short term but can also be used long term if the side effects are managed or not causing issue and it must be supplied on prescription. There are no over the counter anti-inflammatories that I know of for small animals. Cystease/cystaid/cystophan can also be prescribedor bought over the counter to help the bladder lining stay healthy. Glucosamine is the active ingredient of all 3 kinds of capsules.

Mods @sport_billy or @Wiebke can you move this thread? Ta!

Brilliant thank you i dont want keep her on metcam to be honest it isnt workin i dont want her stayin on baytrill as i think its killin all the good bacterior

If she's had a course of antibiotics and the symptoms aren't improving, next step would ideally be a urinalysis including culture to identify the bacteria present (if any), and what antibiotic(s) they will be sensitive to.

All advice is welcome and if i can get it and know what to ask for then goin down a diffrent route might work

It may be any idea to look at her diet too? what dry food is she on? and what veg does she have?

Definitely recommend a Glucosamine product, lots of members on her use it for their pigs with bladder issues. I use vegan Glucosamine which keeps symptoms at bay for my Maddie, Phoebe and Amy. I know many people would prefer to use a veterinary product though so Cystease and the like are fantastic.

I hadn't even spotted which section this was in ooops.

They found out through a scan that the walls of her bladder are thick a calcium build up they dont know if she was born this way i asked most likely food so bein xtra carefull what i give her her sister doesnt have any problems but she may be sencitive when she goes toilet she still sqweeks but no more blood thankfull and iv just sent of for some probiotics to see if that will help and sorry for puttin it in wrong place wasnt sure were to put it if I'm honest x

The metacam is important too though. Piggies are very good at hiding pain so even though they don't look too bad they can still be in significant amounts of pain. If we had kidney stones, a bladder infection or cystitis we'd all be knocking back the paracetemol or ibruprofen to cope with it or even something stronger so it's just the same for piggies. An anti-inflammatory doesn't just help with the pain but reduces swelling and inflammation which in turn make urinating easier and more comfortable. it gives the antibiotics, glucosamine or whatever a chance to work.

I agree with Amanda, a culture will help the vet decide best what antibiotic is going to work best to treat any remaining infection. Using a probiotic along side it will help reduce sideffects but using a probiotic alone will not manage the situation at all. Many antibiotics are not licensed for use in piggies which is why most vets will prescribe Baytril as a first live but then may prescribe others including but not restricted to Septrin, Zithromax or Marbocyl. But the culture will tell them which one will work to kill the bug responsible for your piggies infection. Antibiotics can be very specific so what works for one infection in one pig at one point in time may not be the same as for another piggy's infection at another point in time. If your vet is not willing to prescribe anything other than baytril then please look for an exotics vet locally with a good reputation who will be more used to prescribing off license medication and can get you the drugs your piggy needs.

Off license means they have not got a large amount of evidence for use in small animals (unlike for dogs and cats where most drugs have been well tested and researched) This does not make these drugs any more dangerous or less likely to work, it just means that there is not enough scientific studies done on their use in small animals to license them. Most medicines for exotic pets like reptiles, birds and even guinea pigs are not licensed as testing on these species is not routinely done at a research level.

Food she was on supreme sience select but that is full of alfalfa so thats gone she is havein a bit of excel and a bit of gerty guinea till i can find some thing better iv cut her right down on veg she only has celery and cucumber for now not every day the odd bit of carrot and apple x

You'll always get advice on here - sometimes when you dont even need it :) I was asking as some hay has higher calcium content than others but you seem to be well ahead of me there so thats great :)

Connie thank you so much for the link for the cavy cuisine, it's the best price I've seen online so far! :)

I have to say i thought it was a good price, i just got myself another bag only a week or so ago as i had run out. :)

Hi connie lol only cause some 1 told me a few days ago i thought reddigrass and graze on was good it might be ok for the other two but not shona so i dumped atm they are all gettin the same till i can get on top of this and get it under control and untill this last flare up i didnt know a from b so I'm relearnig as i go along but with this calcium causin so much trouble then bein aware of

It seems your doing everything you possibly can. It is still a balancing act for me with pellets, i try to limit them as much as possible but found the piggies then began loosing weight so I'm now increasing them again. Its abit of a faf but definately worth it!

Hi connie can you do me a massive favour and have a look at the protine leavel in the cavy cusine food please as we are now on the right road she sayr with a massive smile x x x

Brilliant i showed the vet what you sent and she read the bit in discription and said it looks ok but just check the protine level shona still has to stay on metcam but she got some wee from her took it in the back there was no blood at all the calcium level is dropping she is now on 1mill a day of septrin she had some wee in the spin dont understand that bit and just to keep me eye on protine levels so its lookin good thank goodness and a massive thank you to you x x
