Hi guys!
I've been seeing ants in my guinea pig's cage. I haven't seen hundreds or thousands, but there is quite a few. So, I have some questions.
First, how can I stop this? I've sprayed bug spray everywhere in the room, (Not in the guinea pig's cage) but they still keep coming! Is there any thing that can stop them?
Second, do ants hurt guinea pigs? I haven't seen bumps or anything, but I 'm worried about their health.
Thanks!

Please ring an exotics clinic and ask for local brands that are safe to use around guinea pig cage.

It depends on the variety of ant; normal ants are not so much of a problem but you do not want them to invade a cage.

Are your guinea pigs indoors and could you move them to another room temporarily? The cage could be an attraction for foraging ants.

I had this and asked the same question. I cleaned the hutch out thoroughly and put two of these underneath as they were recommended by other people on the forum. My hutch is outside but they are normally used indoors - if you can see where they are coming into the room, that's the best place.

Find the nest and get boiling water into it. Black ants wont hurt. Red ants or wood ants will bite

You could put down ant poison where you see them running (well away from the cage obviously) and the ants will eat that and take it back to the nest. You have to persevere as it could take a while depending on how large the nest is.

I had a nasty bite from a black ant a few weeks ago.

Thanks for the tip. I haven't been seeing any more ants, but if I do, I'll try to see where they are coming from.

The ants look black so are black ants a problem? Thanks for the information by the way.

OK thanks! I'll try to locate the nest if the black ants come again.

Sorry the pic didn't load for some reason! I used Ant Stop bait traps and they worked - first of all they attract more ants but as they take the poison back to the nest it kills the nest (I hate doing it but the pigs come first.)

You can smear the hutch legs with Vaseline, spread it thick on all four sides and that should stop slugs and ants. They don’t like vicks vapour rub either
