Hi folks. my little 6month old piggy, eddie has been 2 the vets twice in 2weeks with ear mites. had ear drops which didnt work so was told 2continue with the drops and he was given an antibiotic jab. that was on tuesday. the little man seemed ok this morn, but as i have got in from work tonite he wasnt his usual lively noisy self. he isnt eating except for some nibbles of a slice of cucumber, and he isnt drinking either. he is very lethargic and isnt moving about. can anyone give me any advice to try and perk my little piggy up until i can get him to the vets in the morn?x

Keep him warm overnight, use a hot water bottle or something if you can but make sure he can get away from it if too hot (and wrap it in towels etc).

You'll need to syringe him fluids (just water is fine) and some food to keep his guts moving. If you have pellet food you can grind it up into a mash by putting boiling water on it and mashing it up until it's like a thick soup, then syringe or spoon feed it down him.

Try grating some veg for him, and try fresh grass - they'll often eat that if nothing else tempts them.

Hope he's ok

The stars are replacing a word that I abbreviated, it should have said probably lol x

Are you sure it was an antibiotic jab and not an ivermectin jab? what is the medication that was given? It is extremely important to know this before I would be prepared to comment on why he has suddenly gone downhill today. As already said - keep him warm, eating, drinking and pooping

Also what ear drops are you using?

He is 6 months old therefore to clear the ear mites your piggie should be given ivermectin injections (3 in total) spaced 10-14 days apart. He should also be given ear drops that dissolve ear wax to expose the ear mites to the action of the ivermectin.

For info: The ear drops prescribed to my piggie were Virbac epi-otic given once every two weeks.

It is essential he sees a vet tomorrow as if he isn;t eating or drinking he may need to be rehydrated....

Hope the vet can sort Eddie out tomorrow - please come back and update us (and don;t forget to find out what he was jabbed with last time)

i'm pretty sure it was antibiotic as nothing was said about going back for additional jabs. the drops i've been given are called canaural 2-3 drops a day. he has had a bit of water from a syringe and a teaspoon of mushy biscuits as advised earlier. he has perked up a tad as he has now decided he has the strength to chew the towel he is lay on! is it wise to put him back in his cage he shares with his pal or seperate? only **** there is i have only got a deep box to put him in and not very practical to put water access in for him.

Hi everyone! just to let you know,i took eddie to the vet this morn,he still very poorly but i took all advice given. thank you. he did have an antibiotic jab on tuesday. but the lovely vet today looked into his ears and he has developed an infection deep in his ears. she gave him another antibiotic jab to combat the infection and a liquid antibiotic i need to give twice a day for 2 weeks. she wants to see eddie again on monday and gave me tips on feeding him. i was chuffed tonight to see him drink from his bottle by himself! and he got a bit excited by the smell of howies fresh food but just couldnt quite bring himself to eat it. (he is getting force fed blended mushy veg every 4 hours though!). he not out of the woods yet but he a little fighter,so fingers crossed for little eddie! thank you all again for your help and support. x

Phew, I held my breath when I saw you'd posted. Can you get Eddie some pro biotics to add to his water. AB's really upset the gut flora, and you will need the PB's to re balance. P@H sell it. Small yellow tub, with a piccy of all sorts of animals on it. May be called ProArk or VetArk or something like that. Give little Eddie a cuddle from me. x

Just an update on eddie. He actually passed away early hours this morn. He had gone so weak throughout yesterday, but i was still hoping the medicine would kick in,he was still takin fluid and food,so he was desperately fighting through it all. He was so brave. My beautiful howie is back on his lonesome without his little playmate. :'-(

I'm so sorry that your boy didn't make it. You gave him the best of chances. Hugs for you and Howie. x

Goodnight lovely Eddie. :rose
