My little piggie Gideon has an internal mass in his groin area above his testicles so I'm having it removed on Monday.
I'm thinking of testing my crochet skills and make a little jumper or something that will wrap around the upper body to keep him warm under the anaesthetic. Would anyone have a crochet pattern that would suit the shape I'm trying to make? I'm still new to crocheting so I'm ok at following a pattern, I just can't make one up as I go.

Thank you!

I’m afraid this isn’t a very good idea, guinea pigs shouldn’t wear clothes in any circumstance. The vets will be able to keep him warm enough during and after, so please don’t do anything like this.

When my Christian had a MAHOOOOOOSIVE abscess removed my vets wrapped him in bubblewrap and even made him little gloves out of bubblewrap for his paws to keep him warm during his op which was just over an hour long. Wishing Gideon all the best.

The vets should have the means to keep them warm. I crochet and knit but would never make clothing for the piggies because of their delicate spines and the risk of injury in using them

Hi!

Knitted and crochet clothes are far too dangerous aroung guinea pigs as nails can catch and rip and piggies can end up eating the wool (which for them is edible fibre). They are also useless as this not an area that you can protect with any cover anyway.

Vets generally have their own methods of safely keeping small pets warm during an operation.

Your vet should be able to stitch the operation wound in a way that your guinea pig cannot get past it and it not causing any discomfort. In my own experience with a number of operations, if done properly, the piggy is going to leave any operation wounds perfectly alone unless they are not healing or are done really badly as to cause serious discomfort.

Painkillers for the first few days after the operation once the medical operation cocktail has worn off (of which analgesics are part of) is something you may want to enquire for - how soon and how high (please keep in mind that general vets tend to underestimate the dosage). They should also be given ever 12 hours and not just once daily because of the fast metabolism.

When Ruby had an operation the vet filled surgical gloves with warm water and placed those around her and then covered her with fleece strips.
I think all vets do things differently, but they will definitely have their preferred way of keeping him warm.
If you are concerned you could always ask if it's ok to send in a blanket or fleece, but in operating theaters it is unlikely they will use anything non sterile.

Thanks all :) I know not to put a crochet blanket or jumper when conscious, i just meant for the surgery itself when he's under and removal on recovery. Otherwise use bubble wrap/hot hands/snuggle safes. There's small fleeces but I feel they don't fit snug around them or they are still too large.

As mentioned above, it is highly unlikely anything like that will allowed in during surgery as it won’t be sterile.

Good luck for your piggy's surgery! He is a really cute guy❤

Wishing you all the best for Monday gorgeous Gideon. X
