So my friend isn't having much luck with her piggies. She has 1 boar now called Oreo he's almost 3 and has had a few gut problems over his lifetime. My friend called me this morning saying Oreo has runny stools and doesn't seem himself. He has lost a tiny bit of weight he was 870g he's now 847g. I said to stop all veg for 24hrs make sure he has plenty of hay and make sure he is drinking. She wants to give him some critical care food shall she give this to Oreo now as I'm not sure x

She should probably make a vets appointment and make sure she has the phone number for an emergency out of hours vet in case things suddenly worse, but in the meantime stopping veg and feeding critical care and maybe also a probiotic sounds like a good plan- also weighing daily to monitor any more weight loss. But if it was any of my piggies I'd be straight on the phone to the vet just to be on the safe side!

Hi!

Runny poos should be seen by a vet asap within 24 hours of them starting, asap as an emergency if a piggy is looking really ill and lethargic; there is a significant risk of dehydration. In this case, I would recommend to have the boy seen preferably tonight if at all possible!

Yes, stop all veg and fresh food and start syringe feeding asap; add plenty of probiotics to the mix. Mushed up pellets will do until the vet visit (cut off the syringe tip as shown to allow fibre to get through); tell your friend to ask for recovery formula if she hasn't any. Add dioralyte (US: pedialyte) from a pharmacy to any water you offer. You friend's syringe feeding and watering support is vital. the vet may choose to give sub-q fluids for proper rehydration.

Has your friend's vet ever done any investigations as to the nature of the digestive problems (poo float)?

Thanks for your reply the vet just keeps saying he's just a piggy with upset tummies every once in a while. Oreo is refusing the rescue food so told my friend to keep trying as he needs the meds still trying to get him to a vets x

Sounds like it’s time to find a vet with more experience in piggies!
They don’t just get upset tummies for no reason. Best of luck to your friend and her piggy!

I've given her the number for a guinea pig savy vet that's near to her, Oreo is doing better this morning he's up and about and seems a bit more alert x

My friend took him to the vets he's been given some probiotics and he's to have no veg for another 24hrs. Vet said he is bloated so has given him some rescue meds incase he gets worse. I saw Oreo myself this evening he's still very withdrawn but he's alert and looking around and drinking more which is good thank you for all your help and advice x
