My boar has a little bit under his chin where he has no fur. It is not red or inflamed and doesn't annoy him when I touch it. Any ideas what it might be?

Does he get a wet chin from eating? Sometimes pigs can get tangles under there if they are messy eaters or have teeth problems (his front teeth look okay in the photo).

I have had a boy that had a bit of boar glue stuck under his chin. He got it off himself and it left a little bald patch. It has happened to another pig too on top of his nose.

Thank you for your reply. I've never noticed him having a wet chin from eating. Do you think it's something I can just keep an eye on or something I need to see a vet about? X

If he's eating okay I'd personally just keep an eye on it. It doesn't look red or sore so just keep an eye on it for changes. Have a feel under there as they can get abscesses and lumps under there.

It does very much like the bald patch my boy had from pulling off a bit of boar glue.

Hopefully that's it then :). There are no lumps....he loves chin rubs so I'm always feeling him there lol. I'll keep an eye on it. Did your boys bald patch grow back? Did it take long? x

Yeah it grows back. I think Jon's nose hair took about a fortnight before it was covered up again.

That's another way to see if it's something else. If you can't see any new hair growing in a few days it might be something else, like a skin condition that would need a vet visit. It does look fine to me though x

Baldness on this area is usually the result of overgrooming a wet chin either from sloppy eating or drinking or potentially the beginning of dental problem at the worse end.

A few months ago he did have a problem with his back. He was pulling his fur our and would jump when you touched it. I took him to vet and she ruled out ringworm and mites etc, and gave him cream for it. After using the cream for a week and then bathing him in Gorgeous Guineas Manuka and neem shampoo it went away. Originally I thought it maybe could be that again but he is not bothered at all when I touch it whereas with the last one he hated you going anywhere near it. I'll just keep an eye on it for the time being since it's not annoying him and he is eating and drinking like a champion lol. Thank you again X

Thank you. Would you agree to just keep an eye on it or do u think I need to see a vet? X

Before I worked out that Toast had dental issues and was in pain, I noticed she had a bald patch under her chin. I could never figure out what it was until one night I caught her pulling her fur out. Turned out she was in pain, piggies can do this to there hair sometimes if they're in pain.

Worth keeping an eye on

Keep an eye on it. Check his front teeth - are they uneven or slanted? This is a sign that the back teeth are out of kilter. Weighing regularly can also help you - guinea pig with dental issues struggle to chew and/or swallow and therefore lose weight. Check the water bottle - is your boy a messy drinker? Could you adjust how the bottle is fixed?

In what way do u mean adjust the water bottle? He has perfect straight front teeth. He eats really well and doesn't look like he is having any problems. His weight has stayed steady. He is only just over a year old so still young X

How did she pull it out? Where his is I don't see how he could reach it with his mouth X

Check whether he is getting a lot of water running down his chin and whether it may be easier for him drink if the bottle is at a different height.

With straight front teeth and a stable weight, you are likely to eliminate the issue of dental problems at the back of the mouth when the premolars overgrow and form a bridge over the tongue, trapping it and making any chewing and swalling difficult.

I actually used to have my bottles higher in the cage, but recently got living world glass ones and had to put them lower. Maybe the higher bottles were causing the water to drip down his chin? I'll watch him drinking and see if I can notice anything. Thank you for your help X

She used her mouth, looked like it took quite a bit of effort for her to reach as it was just a bit further down than the picture you posted. Toast has quite long hair so it may have been easier for her to reach. Might not even be pain for your piggy, just something to keep in mind maybe x
