I have been asked for my opinion on this piggy and have never seen anything like it before, so wondered if anyone here had or had any ideas?

I wondered if it could possibly be a neurological problem? I am going to recommend she gets an opinion from my exotic pets vet, but thought I would see if anyone here had experienced this?

Hi Layla, It's sarah, owner of Rex and Badger and I'm looking for some advice please. Rex is perfectly healthy but Badger thinks the vets is a fun place to visit! Badger has been treated with antibiotics and antifungals this year. His new trick is to not use a leg. 2 weeks ago he went to the vets because he was just holding one of his front feet up limply, he had an antiinflamatory injection and was fine the next morning. on tuesday morning I got him out of the hutch to discover he was not using one of his back legs properly and was doing a funny little hop/shuffle to move. He then curled up into a ball with his leg stuck out at a funny angle, I actually thought he was going to die from the way he was acting. another vet's visit, he doesn't really have a clue what is going on but wonders if Badger has managed to break a toe this time. I didn't take the anaesthetic and xray option as all it would do is confirm diagnosis but no treatment available. another antiinflamatory injection was given and Badger moved better yesterday. today he is back to a funny hop/shuffle. He does put his heel to the ground and could move and bend his toes on examination. The rest of his leg appeared to be fine with no indication from Badger of pain on examination. Any good ideas of what may be going on with the boy before a return visit to the vets?
They still get the supa guinea excel biscuits as well as fruit and veg twice a day. As my friend says I should only worry about Badger when he stops eating cucumber! The vet keeps asking if he gets enough vitamin C but I can't expect them to eat anymore, they are still greedy pigs, and adding vit c powder to there biscuits just stopped them eating these. No point in adding vit c to water they very rarely drink it, I did check this out with the vet but he thinks they get enough fluid through their fruit and Veg. Still get plenty of hay for bedding and to eat. no changes to living accomodation or routine.
All thoughts gratefully received, Thanks

Just an idea...from my piglopedia book....probably not this at all...over supplementation of vitamin D can cause osteoporosis, weakness of the bones...

Do guinea pigs suffer from arthritis ? I dont know but could that be a possibility ?

Hopefully someone else can come along and help you out here...worrying all the same though.
Maybe it is a funny little quirk !

One of my boars, Sunny, had a mystery problem very similar to this last April.
First I noticed he had one front leg raised, not putting weight on it. Other than that, eating, drinking etc.. took him to the vet straight away and she did an xray, no broken bones or any other clue. Put him on 0.2ml baytril x 2 daily for possible infection. Two days later, the other front leg went exactly the same way. Back to vets and upon manipulation, apart from what looked like bruising to the "knee" joints, all seemed normal. Day 4, left back leg went. First leg seemed better, 2nd leg getting there, back leg now swollen and splayed. Sunny was very miserable by now. Upped the baytril from 0.2mls to 0.4mls x 2 daily, metacalm for the pain/inflammation, syringe feeding and hand feeding required + bio lapis.
Spoke to Vedra for a 2nd opinion, she diagnosed systemic fungal but I chose to finish the course of baytril instead of leaving it halfway through and starting on itrafungal. He was on baytril for 3 weeks at the higher dose and the 4th limb never did swell as I expected. A total of 6 weeks from start of symptoms, he was better and "touches wood" is still fine.
Halfway through the baytril, I also supplemented him with zolcal (calcium), vit C and oregano extract as a fecal test showed presence of eimeria parasite!

Sorry its long, just my experience of a similar thing :)

Lavenderjade,
That sounds much more likely than my suggestions !
Sounds almost identical
Thank goodness for the piggy forum !

Thanks that is really helpful. So do you think it was the systemic fungal infection then? I will speak to the lady as he has had a fungal infection already this year so may be connected?

I am pleased I posted now and will pass on these suggestions to her and she can mention to vets.

No, in the end I don't think it was systemic fungal BUT this can have very similar symptoms. I would recommend her vet test some of the GP's poop as this will show up systemic fungal. In Sunnys case, I am 99% sure it was an infection in the joints which could have got in via a minute hay splinter in his foot, but the extended course of baytril did the trick!

I would be interested to find out what it turns out to be in Badgers case :)

Careful with the Piglopaedia book, there is some incorrect information in it.

I would feel certain that any information re. bone problems in this book would be correct as Mette Ruelokke, the author, is a Veterinary lecturer at the University of Copenhagen. She has particular interest in g. pig bone diseases and has a research project on-going looking at osteodystrophy in satins.

Just to rule out the obvious possibility - what breed is your pig?

Swollen joints are one of the signs of vit c deficiency but it sounds like your pigs are getting a good diet.
