i have taken a piggy in tonight that was dumped and found wandering outside a shop, she is sooo thin, you can feel all her bones8... ive got her in a cage in my kitchen so i could keep an eye on her, i noticed that after an hour she hadn't eaten or drank anything so ive mashed up some pellets and spoon fed her, since she's had the pellets she's passed some very soft sticky poos with what appears to be a blood clot in it, obviously she will be going to the vets tomorrow but does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong ?

i would say she could have had a little bleed in her which is now been passed or still active,or could also be due to something she has eatten which could have caused some damage to her bowel maybe a little tear, or she could have been ill treated via been dropped or squeezed.
I hope she gets better soon:(

thanks, I'm so worried about her she doesn't move when she's in her cage, she looks like she's given up, her coat is almost in perfect condition, but you cant see her nails as they are encrusted in poop and her little feet are really sore :( looks like i ll be having a sleepless night :)

wishing the little piggy positive thoughts and hope you get a clean bill of health at the vets!

also if she has had the runs for a while this may explain why she is so thin and could also be why she now has a little blood in her poo,so hope she gets betterxx

Soft poops + blood+ abandoned
think in this case would insist on metranidazole being prescribed as well or alternative to baytril,

After that....(plus probably rehydation sub cu and maybe Vit B12 ).....supreme Recovery or Critical care - fed 2-3 hourly (5-10ml) will be the key to get this little guunea on the mend

Good luck Hun - so pleased you have taken them in. PM for my telebone if you have any probs (have car willl travel)

ooh and cut out veggies apart from a bit f fresh (but not frost shattered) grass ...and give loads of hay

Are you certain that it was blood and that it was in with the pellets? Is there any chance it could have been from the urinary tract or even from the reproductive system?

it was actually in the middle of the pellets and looks like a clot, she was sitting on a towel on my lap so wasn't moving around

Poor thing, at least she's got a chance now she's with you!

I agree with Pebbles, focus on fibrous foods - e.g. hay and dry food- and the Vit C supplement and syringe-feeding for now as fresh veg will probably be a bit much for her system.

I hope she's doing well this morning.

the poor little one hope you get some good news at the vets

sending her a bid cuddle xx

If a pig is really thin/hungry I will offer them a wide range of foods so that they do eat and don't bother about a "textbook correct diet".

I have done this too, offered about 5 different types of dry food, a few different veg is small amounts, some oats, hay etc. I work on the theory, that they must see something they like, and start eating. xx

I find that parsley is a food that many sick pigs like when they will not touch anything else.

well at the moment she has 2 types of dry food and hay, her poops seem to be more normal today than yesterday and no more signs of any clots or blood, i am still giving her mashed pellets and she really tucks in but doesn't seem to interested in the dry food in the dishes, so i am spoon feeding her every 2 hours, ive phoned the vets and am waiting for them to come back to me as she is an RSPCA piggie, will let you know more when i do :)

I agree that it's better they eat something (anything) rather than nothing, also agree that parsley is a good one to try. I just meant not to overload on the veg as she's unlikely to have eaten them any time recently!

Good luck petcrazy, hope she continues to improve bit by bit.
