On how i can cut my piggies nails?

Grissom will lett you hold him and get hold of his feet, but as soon as you go near with the clippers he start to shuffle, My boyfriend holds him whilst i try to clip, and we have tried distracting him and covering his eyes but that doesnt work, any ideas how I can go about trimming them?

And my other piggie, Gizmo well he just won't let you hold him at all in a way, which is possible to get to his nails, I have tried wrapping him up in a towel but no he kinda bites down really hard and struggles free.

It is the first time doing the nails, and the reason I ask is, I rang the vet that we take our other pets too and he said he didn't have any experience with piggies, but he would gave us a number of someone who was, only problem is this vet surgery is around one and a half hours away from us, and my parents are just refusing to go all this way when I can cut them myself.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Well I have some pet ones, but I just tried doing Grissom's nails with the human clippers and he didn't seem to mind those :D so grissom is sorted but Gizmo refuses to stay still.

I use some little silver ones, they are from a cracker I think and they are great as they don't see them. I rap them in a blanket and they burry their head in my arm and then I gently just look at their foot and then clip if I only get one foot or toe done I will do the rest another day have you tried bribery their favourite treat?

Do you know if there is anyone on here that lives near you that could help?

Well I am thinking about getting my friend over the road to help me as he used to keep piggies and is used to cutting their nails, the only problem with that is, he had to give up his piggies has he developed a serious alergy to them, so it would all depend on how long he would be in contact with them. But I don't know if anyone on her lives near me.

My advise would be to cut the nails on one foot one day, the nails on another foot the next day and so on. It will take some time for the guineas to trust you and for you to learn how to handle them. If your vet can't even cut the nails on a guinea, I wouldn't let him do anything else with them. They will should be fine after a little while, but be careful you don't catch the quick as they we probably not behave or trust you cutting their nails ever again. I think the best option would be to find someone who has a little bit more experience and I'm sure there has to be another vets closer then one and a half hours away. Good luck and let us know how you get on. O0 Are they rescues?

we usually put them on their backs and my sister cuts whilst I feed them chocolate. They'll always wriggle ours still do and we've always cut their nails since they were born (so to speak) but they tend to stay still when eating treats they love.

:o they can eat chocolate?

Chocolate is toxic to guineas and shouldn't be fed to them. However, I think Jayms_fallen_angel means the chocolate made for guineas. :)

I do... real chocolate is mine and no matter how much Acorah climbs on my bed and into my lap she cannot have it. -looks firm-

Most pet stores will have some sort of chocolate treat for small mamals. O0

Umm either pets at home or the local one in town. Chocolate drops or yogart drops. Comes in small red packets. My piggy gobbles it up so fast.

Aaah, ignore my post in the rescue section then :) Real chocolate is toxic :)

I posted in the rescue section in reply to JFA that chocolate was toxic as it wasn't clear whether it was treats being fed or human choccy :) When I read this one it became obvious it was pet treats :)
