Hey there .. i have been given an assignment in animal behaviour and that is to get an animal habituated to a certain thing and write a report on it.
I think i will use one of my piggies, but does anybody have any idea what i could get them habituated to ?

One of my mates is borrowing one of my piggies also for her project, shes going to habituate them to a vibrating laughing toy (as long as i feel its not to loud)

Any ideas ....

Sound

Guinea pigs seem to be very sound oriented - mine are anyhow - so you could go from there. Play them a note on a musical instrument and then give them a treat. See if they start to expect the treat when it's played....then try a tune instead of a single note and give something else. After a while they should be able to differentiate. Not sure what you could give though. I suppose it would be an experiment in pitch rather than sound - you could use the same note and two different instruments...?

My piggies learnt to play a bell to summon me very fast. Columbia would play the bell, Magenta never got the hang of playing it so she'd stand by it until Columbia obliged. Columbia played it when it was tied to the cage high and low, when it was a rolling clown toy and even played it for attention after I took it away for a few weeks and reintroduced it. I had to remove it altogether after a while - she had me running at her whim!

If you don't have an instrument you could try music. Taped classical, then taped pop and a different thing happens with each...just a suggestion. Interesting project, I hope you have lots of fun with your piggies doing it!
