Anyone got any suggestions for what their piggies have liked in the last stages of pregnancy and then when nursing? Anything different from the normal hay bedding? I see some people use fleece. Is that safe?

I would probably use white towels... thats what I use if a piggy is poorly, or after operations, it is just less likely that any bedding gets into potential wounds etc, and you can see if there is any oozing or bleeding. Now with regard to pregnancy, I would say that you would probably want to keep a close eye on your sow for a few days after giving birth, so I would say some sort of very light coloured towel or fleece would be your best bet, then you can see if she is bleeding when she shouldnt be anymore.

if you are worried about absorbency - I used to put woodshavings underneath the towel, because it soaked up alot more urine than the towel itself. It would mean you would not have to disturb the mother and babies to clean out the towel daily, as the wee usually just goes through, get soaked up the shavings, and the towel dries again. Newspaper on their own do absorb, but just not as good.

I know some people do not like the use of woodshavings, but I have found it to work quite well that way... and it allows your young mother to have a couple of days without being handled for cage cleaning.
