Hiya, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions when cutting nails. Basically our clippers broke and we had to get some more but these ones were the sort of guillotine style and I didn't feel comfortable using them.
Too scared to use them we ordered some more and let piggy's nails grow for the time being (not ideal I know)
But now his nails have started to curl to the side making it more difficult to even get the clippers near to the end of the nail without the others getting in the way. Does anyone know of a way to make this easier?
Also am I correct in suggesting that where the nail is lighter at the end that's dead nail, would it be ok to cut all that off?
I'm a massive scaredy cat when it comes to nail clipping, as soon as I pick him up I get nervous. He's a massive fidget too so that's not helpful.

If he has white nails then you can cut just before the pink which is called the quick. This is were the blood is. It is hard when the nails curl. My Amina nails all grow at an angle and curl. You can get tiny bits off now and then if you are worried.

If you want to you could get the vet to cut his nails and watch carefully so you can do it next time.

With curling nails, it is sometimes easier to cut off several little chunks instead of one difficult to get at long bit. With dark nails, you can safely cut as far back as to where the nail is starting to twist without hitting the quick.

I've done it a few times before, but due to clipper dramas he's not had it done for some time. So they've gone a bit harder and darker in color .
I managed to do 1 nail yesterday, I can't even remember which one it was!
Going by those statistics I should finish the whole set by next week.
I'll bribe him with some lettuce and aim for a whole foot, failing that just 2 nails today would be an improvement.

Cool thanks for this. This is really helpful.

With long nails, it sometimes is more useful to err on the side of caution as the quick can get longer. If necessary, rather cut a little bit less and then more the next time not too long after.

Ok thanks. We just need to get back into the habit of doing it again, and I need to not be so scared. :tu:

Just had another go .Love him but, God he's so difficult. :hb: You wait till Daddy gets home sunshine. Your nails- Clipped
