Any tips?

My guinea pig bas been loosing weight and not eating much, so we took her to the vet this Wednesday. The vet said she has a tooth abscess, gas high in her stomach, and she is dehydrated. He gave us medicine and critical care, and she will get surgery Friday. She was about 1 pound 6.7 ounces and has gone up to 1 pound 8.6 ounces. I am wondering if anyone has any tips that I can do to get her any bigger or anything. Thanks, have a nice day.

I’m sorry to hear this.

All you can do is continue to syringe feed critical care around the clock to stop weight loss. Weighing her each morning to monitor. It’s rather about keeping them stable while they are unwell. Regaining lost weight takes quite a lot longer and doesnt really happen until they are over the illness and back to independent and sufficient hay eating.

You can give a few plain porridge oats as a calorie boost.

I wish her well for the surgery. Let us know how she goes.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I’m sorry your piggy is unwell.

I’ve had a piggy with a tooth root abscess. He had surgery to drain the abscess and it was stitched open so it could heal from the inside out. Good luck. Are they on antibiotics and pain meds?

Welcome to the forum and I am so sorry your piggy is sick.
Hope the surgery goes well.

If her mouth is going to be sore perhaps you could put a few finely shredded veggies for her to try. I was advised to do this by a forum member
I also used to put a small dish of Critical Care with mashed banana in the cage to supplement syringe feeding. This helps encourage the piggies to eat for themselves too.

Thanks guys for the replies, the vet is going to wait until Monday to do it because they are closed on the weekend so if any complications were to occur then they would be available. The vet said she has gained some weight and is looking a lot better and can go under surgery now without any worry. Thanks again
