I had had my four year old Amos at the vets. Initially it was xray to check teeth and possible abscess on lower jaw.
He is a cage bar biter.
I did buy him a carrot cottage from Wilkos as it was about £3 cheaper then Pets at Home to try and reduce the bar biting.
However I removed the Wilkos carrot cottage after a few days of him chewing as I noticed a couple of small staples.
A few days later I bought a Pets at Home hay tunnel.
After the vet had anaesthetised Amos he discovered a problem with his two front teeth which he treated.
But the vet also mentioned debris in his lower mouth. He showed me a photo which looked like cardboard and a mush of other stuff. The vet said part of it was cardboard. And it smelt foul.
I can only think it was the Wilkos Carrot house as none of my guinea pigs have had previous problems with Pets at Home items.
If Wilkos put staples in the carrot houses I wonder what the hay is glued on with.
Just wondering if anyone else has come across this problem with debris retained in lower jaw.
Thanks

Not had a problem with Wilkos Carrot Cottages before only that they get turned over and used as a toilet! I now get the hay cubes as I don't need to chuck them out and they are better value. I would complain to Wilkos if you found a staple in the carrot cottage that is awful!

Yes I know I should have gone back to Wilkos but I hadn't kept receipt. It really was irresponsible of me not too as they should be aware of such issues. It was a few months ago and I was having a few other problems that I had to focus on.
I will only get hay cubes in future. As the vet nurse was quite surprised when I mentioned carrot cottages and hay tunnels for guinea pigs she never gave her guinea pigs any form of cardboard.

I don't know if the carrot cottage is to blame but pigs with dental issues often get stuff squashed in the gums around their lower incisors, which quickly starts to smell. if he is a cage biter perhaps this causes a slight movement in his teeth which allows debris to get stuck.

I have to take Amos back in four weeks to get his teeth checked again. So that visit should show any continuing problems with food. It was that the vet was surprised to see cardboard among the food debris that concerned me. But your explanation @Pound Shilling & Pig could be the answer. I stlll will never give guinea pigs anything cardboard though

I had the carrot house for my pigs too, but got rid of it after they used it as a toilet one too many times and became unhygienic.

However, I'm always very sceptical about toys and treats which are labelled as suitable for guineas. There's a "Natural Salad" hay treat Wilko's sells which is advertised for pigs as well as rabbits, yet it contains oat flakes...
