Anyone else here asthmatic?

Had a bit of a scary moment at the weekend with a very sudden asthma episode....

I had spent all day cleaning and grooming the pigs (I've got lots of long-haired pigs...) and wondered if it was more likely to be triggered by:

The hay! New bale
Shavings
Megazorb
or the hair

Or whether perhaps now I've got more pigs indoors, it is affecting it. Any ideas? Really took me by surprise because I've been fine lately and only have it mildly, thank goodness. My sister's reaction (not helpful!) was that I must be allergic to the pigs....

I'm not asthmatic but hubby is and so is 1 of my daughters. My hubby's asthma is badly affected by the hay, hence why mine live outside in the shed.
 
My youngest daughter is asthmatic and my eldest has allergic rhinitis and it is usually the hay that sets them both off - particularly when it's a new bale and I am throwing it around to air it and get rid of the dust! Hits me in the summer months when my hay fever starts and Readigrass/Graze on has the same, if not worse, effect. Rachael does have a mild allergy to the piggies, but hay definitely sets her off.

Ah well it was a new bale and didn't smell the same as usual... :-\

I had wondered about GrazeOn - it does make me choke a bit!

The indoor ones are in my living room temporarily, I like being able to see them but perhaps they should be upstairs instead, in the guinea pig room where they used to be. Using that for quarantine at the moment, hence the rest being downstairs!

i would say hay too. although I'm not asthmatic, my mum and brother suffer from it quite badly
 
my brother is only set off with it when he cleans them out, he is fine holding them, so in his case its definately hay
 
I do, any of the things listed could cause a reaction as they are all quite dusty.I have already started with ' hayfever' from the early tree and flower pollen. It is always bad in February and I was quite bad on Saturday with sore eyes and runny nose. :(
 
The only thing that anoys my asthma is woodshavings but it's fine because we don't use them. I take hayfever tablets all year round so other stuff might be the same but don't realise. Even if the piggies did I don't think I could live without them anyway ;D

Thank you, I'm ok now! Just a bit wheezy but fine. Oddly the Shelties seem to set me off more than my others - not sure if their hair is different?

I think I might take antihistamines (spelling?!) and see if that helps. I used to be allergic to horses too. Typical sister reaction was that I should put the pigs back outside! ::)
 
I'm asthmatic too but don't seem to be affected by anything but my piggies & their bedding is outside in my shed :)
 
iam asthmatic, mine is triggered by exercise tho, not been near hay, but I can be in a very dusty room, dusting and not be affected lol.. ah... thats not helpfull to you at all is it :D
 
OK, so today was big cleaning day and so I took some allergy tablets and my puffer beforehand and nowhere near as bad as last time.... so that's good! Def. think it's the hay!
