Just wondering if anyone has had experience of hand rearing a piggy? And if so how old was the piggy when it went back in with other piggies? x

HonkeysMum hand reared Honkey hopefully she will be on soon and be able to give you some advice. :)

Hi i had to hand rear 3 baby boars that were like 1 day old cause their mum had died and i got given the babies cause the owners didnt want them no longer :-\

They went with my piggies straight away - 2 boars and a sow and a rabbit before i knew any better ::) I gave 2 to a vet and still have one boar today whos like nearly 2 years old O0 I cried my eyes out when the other 2 went and only kept the little one to stay a bit longer cause he was the runt :smitten:

Well i was given a 2 day old sow (well think it is) because it was the runt and mother not interested see had 5 babies and one all ready died. women didnt have time to hand rear so my mum ahs got her tonight and tomorrow then i get her back. Just need to know if theres anything special i should be doing if she makes it. She's getting milk every 2 hours just now that the vet gave us.

Any advice will be great.

Can you not put her with a sow to act as surrogate mother? Obviously you'll still have to feed her but being with a sow would keep her warm. Bless her. :smitten:

I haven't got another cage to out her in on her own with one of my sows and i dont think it would be a good idea to out her in with 4.......what do you think? would it be better than waiting 6 or 7 days till she is a little bit bigger and then place her in with them. She is very very tiny.... i dont think she will make it through the night to be honest. My mum is calling every hour to tell me how she is.

You could improvise and use a cardboard box line it with newspaper and use an old blanket. Anything is worth a try. Not sure about putting her with the four but if you feel she won't make it and there are no other options open to you then it's better than not doing anything at all.

Hope she will be ok. :smitten:

because it was a litter if 5 she is very tiny. At the moment she's in a little box with fleece blankets getting fed every two hours, just hope she makes it through the next 48hours and then i'll find the room to put her with one of the piggies. I just hope she makes it she's beautiful and pure white. Fingers crosses. x
