Hello, I'm just wondering if there is anyone who owns guinea pigs and who has asthma also, who doesn't get affected by them?

Both me and my 7 year old have mild asthma, we rarely need to use the inhalers but I'm worried that when we get our pigs next week, that we will become worse. I'm not allergic to any animals but my son had a bit of a wheeze when we had a kitten staying although he was fine with our dog.

I am taking what precautions I can, I'm getting auboise bedding and have ordered soft hay from dust free hay so hoping that will cut down on the chance of us becoming bad.

Anything else that you recommend?

I'm just hoping there are asthmatics out there who get on okay!

I'm asthmatic, and it's allergic onset, and I'm allergic to pigs and their hay!

My asthma is managed well, and I'm fine, although I do use daily inhalers to keep it under control.

I'm asthmatic and have no problems with my piggies!

Always best to have them in a well ventilated area if you're concerned and if needs be, to store the hay etc in a shed or elsewhere until it's needed in the cage :)

Enjoy your piggies :)

Thanks for replying :)

My son has his brown steroid inhalers morning and night so I'm hoping that will help him and we have plenty of blue inhalers too.

Thanks Charlie :)

That's good to hear, they will be under the stairs in the hallway (just outside the living room), easy enough to air if need be. Thanks for the tip on the hay, one question I do have, how should it be stored? Can it be kept in the box it comes in or should I transfer it to a secure bin?

My husband has asthma and is fine with the piggies themselves it just hay that is an issue. He has 2 inhalers that he takes daily.

We work around this by me filling hutches with fresh hay and him wearing a good quality dust mask from B&Q when he has to deal with hay.

We have 5 piggies and lots of bunnies too.

I hope you can enjoy the piggies without it affecting your family health.

I have severe asthma so have nebs and everything, and had no problems to guinea pigs or any other animals, is the only thing that does not set off asthma, but i have been around animals since birth which i think has helped.

As long as your taking your meds as told, and get dust free hay etc, you should have no problems

Thanks all :) you've all made me feel tons better.

I was also thinking of only putting the hay in the hay racks while my son is in the house to minimise the chance of it affecting his asthma and then while he is at school they can either go in the run with more hay to play around in or I could put some on the floor in their cage. Would this be okay? I know they need 24/7 access to hay but didn't know if it just being in the hay rack for the majority of the time would be okay, they will be provided with lots of other toys too.

I have always just had hay in the rack with all of mine, as has been fine, i just make sure i pack it full and if ever run out then top it up, but they never ran out. I think it is better in a hayrack anyway or off the floor unless also use it has bedding, as keeping it in a hayrack which keep it dry and fresh rather them going to the toilet on it and being wasted

Well they're here! They arrived on Wednesday and so far so good :) not a snuffle or wheeze from me or my son.

i am asthmatic also, i use a brown inhaler & a green powder one morning & night
then i use my blue one if needed
i was terrible at first when my piggies came to live here, but i think i must be immune to them now
i take an anti histamine tablet every morning though so maybe that helps
i've never had guinea pigs before & didn't realise i could be allergic to them
they live indoors in our lounge all year round and are put in a run every day for exercise or they free range around the living room with supervision
i put them out on the grass in the summer for a munch
if one of my pigs cuddle up to my face then i do itch a bit but they don't affect my chest anymore
i use a dust mask and sunglasses when cleaning out the cage , sounds mad but it really helps!

i have mild asthma...brown and blue inhalor...and never caused me any problems. glad your son is doing ok since the arrival of the piggies :-)
