Hi

I was just seeing how many of you have small pet insurance for their little piggies, and if so, who may it be with?/

I ask this question because I have taken my guinea pig several times to the vets now and was wondering would it be more economical to take out insurance?:{

I have looked at several but the excesses are quite high, but i worry about costs for such things as x rays etc as they can become quite costly!

Your thoughts greatly received! :)

I personally haven't got insurance, I have thus far been very lucky and through all the years of pig keeping only ever had a dose of mites that needed vet care and thus the money would have been wasted, there is every chance that it could come in handy and i'm not knocking it i'm just mistrustful of insurance companies and imagine the premium on an older piggy or one who has been previously unwell could be extortionate

piggy insurance

i have looked into this throurghly when zoe was ill and here in oz only dogs, cats, and cattle are insured. small animals can't be insured here.
though i am sure in the UK where guinea pigs have more rights than here in oz there is insurance for them.
i do know for dog or cat insurance basic was $400.00 a year which works out to be around 200 pounds, and excess was $300.00.
i am lucky as i now have a vet who knows me (tough at the beginning she saw zoe but wouldn't give her any medication till i had money as she had been bitten before when she tried to help people out) and she lets me pay bit by bit a week. finally i am ahead and have paid off over $3,000.00 or 1,500 pounds, it has taken 6 months.
so maybe find a vet and get to know them and then see if they will let you pay off any big bills bit by bit.
sorry i couldn't have been more help. hope you find the answers you're looking for perhaps, google it. good luck :rose:rose:rose
i forgot to add some vets don't take insurance here in oz anyway and some vets have their own insurance so maybe have a talk with your vet!

I haven't got insurance for my piggy although I did consider it. The ones I found on the internet were all about £80 per year with about £2,000 - £4,000 cover and £50 excess - which I thought were quite good.

If you think about it you're getting ripped off if you have a healthy piggy/piggies. The excess is always extortionate and each piggy would have to be insured individually.

The best thing to do in my opinion is just to put some money away each month just in case. At least that way the money isn't lost in the ether if your pigs are always healthy.

I agree with DSL this is what I do. It's not worth getting insurance. Sadly some pigs that thankfully live a wonderful healthy happy life pass over in their sleep so it would be a complete waste of money.

I put £5 a week away as does Peter so that is £40 a month we've been doing that for a year so we have a good fund building up. We have to do this as we have 10! :D

I don't have insurance for my piggies - didn't actually realise you could get any, just thought it was for rabbits. Anyway, I have insurance for my cats and it has been a godsend - I have claimed for more than what I have paid out for my 2 cat's insurance for the last 2 years. I have also recently discovered that one of my cat's has a heart defect and needs to see a cardiologist - so yet again my insurance will save me loads of money.:Ayociexp120:

This is a link from another forum where people were enquiring about pig insurance. They insure multiple or single cavies.

I personally put an amount aside each month to cover if any of mine get ill and fingers crossed that doesn't happen too often.

the best thing to do is save a small amount each month in a seperate account i have a post office isa interest is quite good and tax free plus can have easy acess to it

thanks everyone, I wanted to see what others did, i think i will do the same as i think saving is better too rather than the insurance!

I don't have any, it's really expensive and I don't think it's worth it. So far, in 1 and a half years of owning guinea pigs, I've only took one of them to the vets once and they needed no medication.

It makes more sense to me to put some money away weekly/monthly/whatever suits you, then when you need it it's there, but you're not giving money to something which you may never get anything out of.
