Okay so as well as 4 guinea pigs I also have a staffordshire bull terrier named Murphy.

Photo of Murphy:

Now, apparently these breed of dogs are evil and vicious! I beg to differ, not only does my dog LOVE the guinea pigs, he SLEEPS with them (I did have a photo of this but I can't find it anywhere! When I bring Toffee out for floor time, Murphy lies on the floor and waits for Toffee to cuddle up next to him, and at nights Murphy lies outside the cage and sleeps to protect the guinea pigs, now. If thats an evil dog I can't wait to see a nice one! Anyone have the same views as me?

i had a staffy Tia but she died from cancer :( & she loved any other animal, evan when my hamster bit her once haha.

it depends on the owner i would say how they bring them up. but ide say Most wouldnt Hurt a fly :) they are lovely dogs

Hiya - you don't live too far from me! I saw in the paper this area's having a 'home a staffie week' I can't remember any details of what week it is or where it is but there was a big article in the paper about these misunderstood dogs.

Having said that - I would never trust any dog 100% with your pigs unless you are there to supervise at all times. I had a dog (heinz 57 variety!) and I thought she was the most gentle dog ever - and she was - until one day a small boy was running around her whilst we were in a queue. He then brushed against her back and I have never seen such a reaction - she turned and snapped at him right next to his face. I couldn't believe it - and was mightily relieved to find she hadn't bitten him as it was a hot topic in the press at that time (this was a long time ago) My dog never re acted at any other time again like that, that little boy must have touched a nerve or something - but it just shows you can never trust any dog 100%

So I do share your views to some extent - Staffies have a bad press and can be lovely dogs!

I'm a huge dog lover and have 2 cavaliers. There's no such thing as bad dogs its bad owners. I love staffys, very friendly and loyal.

I used to own a rottie years ago while I lived away. Was the sweetest dog going but sadly I had to rehome him after I lost my job and had to move into a rented room. I kept in touch with the owners and he lived a happy life in a pub were he roamed free.

I have to be honest-Staffys scare me because I've heard too many bad stories. I know it's the owner but I think you have to be a certain type of owner to own one of these correctly.

Not so long ago there was a bad incident in the next road to ours. A lady was out walking her dog and two Staffys had got loose. They approached one man washing his car-he got in because they were growling at him.Unfortunately they then attacked the ladies dog and bit her arms badly when she was trying to protect it.
I have to ask myself would have happened if the two dogs were say two collies for example?

I have a little Shih Tzu and if I see a Staffy when I'm out walking her I turn in the other direction.

Rotties the genial giant! Lovely dogs. My girlfriend wants a cavalier, she's wanted one for ages and fell in love at crufts earlier this year.

We have a rescue black lab cross, she is crossed (we think) with a staffy but ahe is soo affectionate its unreal.

I have never let her meet the guinea pigs and I'm sure that wont change. She knows that they are there and sniffs the cage but that's as far as I will let her. She doesn't go upstairs often and when she does the door is shut to the pigs room.

I have yet to meet an "evil" or "vicious" staffy. The last one I met on the street just tried to lick me to death :)) I completely agree with the "Deed not Breed" (owners fault not dogs) and think the BSL is a load of crap.

By the way, Murphy is a very handsome chappy :)

I have 2 Labs, but would very happily have a Staffie. Before all the dangerous dogs malarkey kicked off, Staffies were known as the nanny dog, because they are so good with children and like to take on the role of watch dog. Like your lovely Murphy obviously does with the piggies! :) When we manage to move to a bigger house, we've always said that we'll get a third dog - I would be perfectly happy for it to be a rescue Staffie - all the ones I've met seem to have the same sort of playful, fun-loving attitude that my boys have, so I think that one would fit in well! :)

My sister's has a Staffy called Philly. She's had her since she was 3 weeks because her owner abandoned the pups :( Philly is the gentlest dog I've ever met, both with the children and animals although I would never leave together without extreme supervision. Staffie's have way too much bad press, not enough people realise what lovely, sweet dogs they are :(

What a handsome puppy dog you have there!x)

I am sure I have met one before but I can't recall at this time. I do know that it is the owner and not the dog though. My friends have a boxer and a german shepard who both tend to have bad reps around here. The worst thing they will do is lick you to death! :)) They are always making sure their owners are ok and are the sweetest and playful loving dogs I have meet.:)

'Vicious' dogs are usually the product of a poorly structured 'pack'. Every dog needs to percieve the owner/s as alpha. The more gentle and stable dogs are usually well excercised and bonded, mentally tasked and given a job/role, well fed and then well loved. Any dog not given boundaries and protection will feel put upon to fill the alpha role or feel isolated from the pack and become agressive to assert and protect themselves, whether golden lab or rottweiler. That's a natural defense and entirely the owners responsability to prevent.

By the sounds of it, you're family are doing an excellent job and it must be a complete joy to own a dog who can settle with other pets normally considered.. erm.. nommable by said pooch. xx>>> beautiful picture by the way!
