Took little ronnie to the vets last week as she was not eating or drinking. To be honest i thought i was down to her losing her friend roxy.:(

So yeh i took her to the vets for him to propa squeeze on ronnie little tummy making her reallllllly squeek, and due to this is says she has bladder stones :s :s but surely if you were to squeeze a piggie really hard of course they are going to scream?

i have read that if your piggie has bladder stones they would be losing blood while going to the toilet and that they would squeek when doing so, but ronnie has not been doing this.

any suggestions on it?

thank you!

sam and ronnie x

from what i know guineas can start to lose weight on there back end and some times wee out blood but not all the time,a water sample will tell if there is slush in the bladder which can be the start of a stone forming and an xray.but others on here may have more info on it..

Here is more information about bladder stones from the best medical website we have for guinea pigs: http://www.guinealynx.info/stones.html

If your vet suspects a bladder stone, he needs to follow it up by an x-ray. Ronnie needs NOT to be put under GA (general anesthetic) for that. Wrapping her firmly up in a towel and placing her on a soft surface, will do the trick and is a LOT easier on your piggy as well as your purse.

If Ronnie has got a stone, she will need an operation sooner rather than later. If you do not trust your vet, please ask him to refer you to a specialist or ask around for a good guinea pig vet.

Laura has taken the guidelines from guinealynx and worked out a diet:

My Minx had two bladder stone operations; but I wish I had known about this forum then!

He is so much better now and has put weight on too.

An xray is the definitive test for the presence of a stone in the urinary system.
There is no need for a GA. I can confirm that from my own "hands on" experience.
Blood may or may not be present in the urine of a pig with a stone.
