Anyone know what my piggie died of?

My gorgeous friendly piggy died last night after having dental surgery on Tuesday. We noticed he had lost alot of weight rapidly and took him to the vets who said his back teeth were so bad they had to x-ray to see if he had a broken jaw (he hadn't). After surgery he seemed ok until yesterday afternnon were he didn't seem his usual self and his eyes seemed sunken. He died in the night, anyone have any idea's of what he died of. He was so loving and i miss him :(

So sorry to hear about your piggie. It could be a case of aspiration, this is when the piggie inhales some foreign matter onto its lungs, whilst under G.A. This happened to a piggie of mine following neutering. It may not be the case, but it just might be. I hope you are o.k. So sad to lose a pet under such circumstances.
 
I am very sorry; recovery is often slow after dental treatment because of the mouth being so sore and painful. Piggies can die a few days after an operation due to late problems with anaesthesia.

Did you hand feed before or after the operation to keep the weight up and the guts going?
 
Yes the vets gave me some soft food to feed to him before and after. He ate some last night before i put him to bed.
 
I'm really, really sorry for your loss. I had a piggie die due to dental complications- in her case, she had an infection in the root of the tooth that progressed into the bone and then into the bloodstream. Teeth are, unfortunately, a potentially serious problem for guinea pigs.
 
Thats why when i noticed i took him 2 the vets straight away. They gave me the food and i fed him but he still didn't survive.
 
I'm very sorry for your loss.

We lost a pig to dental issues last year and it was heart breaking. You did everything you could but sometimes that isn't enough. Sometimes its just not meant to be.

RIP piggy.
 
i have also lost a piggy following his second dental, he came round and seemed ok, but the next morning he was going. So very sad to see, and i do not know why, maybe he just couldnt take the anaesthetic after losing weight.

Try not to dwell on why etc, just remember your lovely boy for what he was, this just wasnt his time thats all.

Sometimes nothing you can do.When our sweetboy stop eating we feed him manually 6 months 3 times a day visited best specialists in uk (Vedra,Anne and CJ Hall clinic) spent 1000 pounds treatment but he died anyway as we been told from multiple problems included cancer.
Many vets don't know nothing about pigs (and don't have to to be called VET) and told you that probably dental problems and that's why we pay for post mortal operation to now what happens.
Me and my wife got psychological trauma and I still sometimes crying when watching his picture and videos.
It is only 1 positive outcome I know much more about GPs and other exotic animals.
Most people specially who get GP first time don't know nothing about them,more likely get them for kids.But guineas much more serious animals even for most of adults.Sorry for my English but it is not my native language.
 
Thank you all for your kind words. I am frustrated because it happened so quickly. Within one week of noticing the weight loss and after 3 visits to the vets who told me after the surgery he would be ok it was just a shock to see him like that. At least he didn't suffer for any longer. I have always been impressed with these vets when i have had to take my dog but i think if my other piggie gets ill i will find a different vet who specialise in them more.

I think our cases are somewhat similar.
My Sundae's teeth were too long, and his back molars were completely overgrown.

My guinea pig died in October of something like that. He just kept losing weight and he lived for about a month afterward. I personally think it was starvation and old age because he was five and he had horrible constipation. Like really bad constipation. I came home and he was lying on the floor of his cage stone cold, and I picked him up but he wasn't dead. He died in my arms later that night.
I really feel for you... I know how it is to lose a precious piggybunny.
 
Yes it sounds very much like your case. I didn't realise how many piggies died of tooth problems and dental surgery until i researched it more. The only thing the vet warned me about was that he might not wake up from the GA. It's so sad :(
