I have two guinea pigs I may have to sell and no other place to Intrust them to than from someone on here. They live indoors and my partner wants them to live outside. And I can't do that to them it's too cold now. So want to sell them to someone who can keep them indoors

Tell you partner they can live outside if he buys and insulates you a nice little shed for them to live in! ;)

I have responded on your other thread, but all I can say here is please PLEASE do not sell your guinea pigs, or put them on selling pages such as GumTree or PreLoved. You never know where they could end up or the treatment that they will receive, and you cannot guarantee that they will go to a good home. If you cannot find a trusting home for them then please strongly consider handing them over to a rescue, as at least you know they will be taken care of.

Ah-ha thats why you asked :)

My girls live outside in a hutch, in a shed, they have a big old duvet on top of the hutch that gets pulled down over at night to cut down draughts, although a gap at the bottom to make sure enough air is available, they have newspaper, covered with shredded paper then topped with heaps of hay to snuggle in.
a small tubular greenhouse heater is put on in the coldest weather & i managed to get some 'snugglesafes' off of Amazon really cheaply.... they are excellent they go in the microwave & keep their heat for around 8hours.
cosy cups, fleecy tunnels etc can all be added to keep them warm & cosy too.

agree with the others though, please dont sell them, have you tried the rescue locator for anywhere local to you? Or even the rescue & rehoming section on here if you feel you cant keep them?

if you still wanted to keep your piggies - outdoor life is really not so bad!
tell your other half he can even share their shed if you get one big enough, they won't run off with his tools...hehehe ;)

ever since i have had piggies they have all lived outdoors, but coming in for cuddle time on a regular basis ;)
Although indoor piggies are definitely the way to go ... if my circumstances were different mine would be indoors!

Good luck convincing your other half to keep them in!

xx

I live relatively near and could foster for a while possibly ( I need to give it careful thought as I don't really have room but I'd hate to see them in the wrong home). However I echo the others, carefully managed outdoors is fine. I nicked the garden shed ! I would think hard first as its not that bad? Could you not rehome the other half?!

I'm confused. Some people say don't give them away. Others say don't sell them as in for money. I only want a little bit of money for my kids as it's their GPS.
Aside from wanting to keep them indoors I cannot afford to keep them and give them a comfortable life. We have a shed. It's full of junk. Neither of us go in the shed as were scared of spiders so a shed for gps wouldn't be any good.

You shouldn't sell them, you took them on and now your circumstances have changed, that's not the guineas fault. You now have a responsibility to find them the best home. Speak to Anna at wheek and squeak near Southampton, she may be able to help and I could foster while she finds them a home. Please don't sell them. Do you have details about their age? Colour, sex?

Just seen your other thread in re homing so I have the detail now thanks. Let me know re Anna etc.

Sorry this is my garbled post on the subject! Just a thought but if money for the children is an issue, rescues rarely take cages so you could rehome them and sell the cage, which would ultimately be more sellable and valuable without the guineas. Just a thought. I promise to shut up now!

Cage is only worth a tenner

This is your chance to teach the kids that an animal is not a disposable thing to sell on when they can't be bothered with them anymore. I know you will probably hate me for saying it but a good home for a pet is more important than money .What size is the cage as they are usually quite exoensive so you may get more than a tenner

Hello

The most important thing here is your Guinea Pigs welfare and that is why you posted your threads inquiring about rehoming and took the time to join the forum.

I would urge you to surrender them to a reputable rescue, the contact details for one have been provided in this thread for you. You have also had the kind offer of a foster home while a perfect home would be being sort for your piggies.

I would advise you not to sell your piggies via any sort of classified ads as they are more likely that way to end up with people that have no concern over their welfare.. backyard breeders, snake owners etc...

If the concern is keeping them outside, many people on here have very well insulated sheds and I am sure would be willing to give you advice on how to achieve a suitable, warm outdoor home for them.

Please don't expect any forum member on here to offer you money for your piggies, we are a rescue orientated forum and will support you to find a rescue place for your piggies.

I would seriously consider Guinea Slaves offer as a foster home for Mater and Sally if 'Wheek & Squeak' rescue could take your Guinea Pigs in.

As suggested if you feel you need some money, you can sell their cage and items. By surrendering your guinea pigs to a rescue you would have peace of mind that your piggies are safe and going to end up in a fully home checked, safe home in the future.

All people are trying to say is,

Don’t give them away for free just anywhere ie. Gumtree, PreLoved (not that we’re saying you would just that you may think of it as another option) as they will end up as snake food.

Don’t necessarily give them away for money as most of the best homes, especially here on a safe forum will be with a rescue or a foster home where they will be given a top class life which comes at a cost for the people who are just trying to do a good thing.

Animals of any species are not a possession that you can just sell willy nilly, as you know they’re family members, it’s good that you’ve come to the decision that you can’t give them the life you think they deserve and i’m grateful that you came to a guinea pig forum.
I’m not trying to throw you in to the same bucket but lots of people buy guinea pigs that then get thrown from home to home because the people in the first place didn’t think it through for example, kids got bored, couldn’t afford the up keep etc. etc. the list goes on! I’m not trying to judge you or your sittuation i’m just saying, that people on the forum are worried because it’s a very familiar sight for us where unwanted guinea pigs are just given away but not in the right way, because thats just the way some people see pets, as something that you can just give away, and not think through what will happen to them, and not as the responsibility they really are, so many people just let their guinea pigs loose or leave them at rescue centres, which in most cases is how a lot of us forum member came about having our guineas, because their previous homes could no longer care for them. We just want whats best for your pigs, so they don’t end up in a never ending rehoming cycle.

We’re just trying to offer the best advice we can from our experiences. I hope that comes across the way i intended.
