I was concerned reading on this forum that apples are bad for guinea pigs.

My boyz absolutely love apples and eat them all the time.

What will happen to them? :(

Is a little okay?

Apples only affect some guinea pigs. These guinea pigs have a weakness in the membranes of their lips which can be damaged by the acid in apples, leaving the underlying tissue open to fungal or bacterial attack. The symptoms are hard dark scabs around the lips.

One of my three guinea pigs had this problem so if your guinea pigs have been eating apples and have shown none of the symptoms then apples are not a problem for them.

Symptoms occur quite quickly so if you have been feeding them apples for a while and nothing has happened, keep apples in their diet!

Hope this helps. :)

mine love apples but only get them now and again as a treat, the milder less acidic apples are best i find. :)

Mine get an apple about once a fortnight. Shared between 5 they just get a small portion and then they only get the red ones which dont seem to acidic.

Thanx everyone for your advice.

Mine eat about half an apple a day.

Altho they don't have any mouth probs, I can see how the sugar could be unhealthy.

I might reduce it a bit.

:)

i didn't know that thanks
i went into a pet shop a few times and they always had a few whole apples for like 3 piggies
