Although I have only been on the forum a couple of months there seems to be a lot of piggies dying recently, especially from URI related problems. Is this normal? The reason I ask is that over the last 3 years the only issue we had with ours was having to get their nails trimmed. Now in the space of 12 weeks we have lost 3, one to a tumour, 2 to URI illness.

I'm so sorry to hear of your losses. RIP little piggles, run free at the bridge.
One of my favourite 'youtubers' has one piggy sick at the moment with a URI. It seems as if there is something going round at the moment. I'm not sure what it is but it looks as if it has affected a lot of piggies.

I recently lost Eric to pneumonia and he had had a urinary tract infection the week before. I sincerely hope that, if there is something going round, it goes away soon.

Hugs to everyone who has lost a pig recently. :(

Actually - thinking about it - I've recently had 2 rabbits with pneumonia/snuffles as well. Thankfully they've recovered though.

I'm just wondering how many people who have lost animals have had their piggies out on grass already this year? Could there be a link between grazing & the sudden changes in weather as one minute it is really nice & warm, next it is raining & cold & windy?

Mine don't go out & if they do it is usually only in June-September when the weather is warmest.

None of mine have been out yet this year. What about bedding? I use megazorb.

It's this time of year unfortunately...
With the extremes of weather it messes them round a bit...

Dont worry about there being any conection to food or bedding or a mystery disease...

Sorry for your losses... Rip piggies...
x

Seems so to me, just lost 3 this past week and another was ill enough to need hospitalisation over the weekend until tues.

Not sure about it being weather, mine are all indoors. But I could be wrong. Maybe something to do with germs as they get fresh grass from the allotment?

Sorry for anyone else that has also lost piggies x

Laura Piggiepigpigs?

I lost mine to pneumonia this week too :( keeping a very close eye on my other, mine haven't been out this year so far,
Dunno what's causing it! Hope it goes away soon but I dont think the weather we ate getting helps, fluctuating from heating on then boiling sunshine then back to heating on ?!

I lost flash sunday, but up to the end of march I had put them all out during that warm spell at the warmest part of the day for 3 days, they have been in ever since then and on fleece. It was a shock as up till the previous sunday there were no symptoms or indication of a problem till he just stopped eating, fluffed himself up and sat in the corner, took him to the vets, got the treatment but he never improved (never got worse till sunday evening when he died either), just stayed the same. The girls are all fine.

I do wonder knowing a little history to flash's stay in the rescue and this is no comment on their care or anything like that, he had a spout of illness and lost weight, took a few months to put it back on and then was ready for adoption so I wonder if there was something underlying in him already that was triggered in the past week or so. He was a small boar, never podgy like fudge is but not a runt.

This time last year I had them out on grass already but only on warm and dry days, they were in a hutch then, I have not put them back out in the hutch yet as its a lot colder than last year still and they have been in a centrally heated house so not fair on them. I was cutting grass for them everyday as I am now so nothing bar their home location is different.

I doubt there is a connection, just coincidence as its all been different things that has taken our pigs from us.

How many of you who lost piggies to a URI or pneumonia had vets that prescribed Furosemide for their piggies alongside the antibiotics? I would be interested to know.

we post pepper to suspected pneumonia, he was given baytril, but not sure of the other drug, but i will phone vets tomorrow to find out x

Moon and Junior were given Baytril, Moon recovered Junior didnt. Then Moon had a recurrence over Easter was given marbocyl with probiotic. She seemed to get better, eating again and then went in the night without warning.
