Hi, have not been on here for a little while but have enjoyed reading all the latest posts - especially with photos!

Anyhow I just want to know are guinea pigs always hungry? I feed mine at the same time every morning (with dry food) and give them timothy hay and vegetables in the evening along with having a constant supply of hay and if it is sunny they go on the grass but they wheeke all the time! I know they are not poorly as I handle them loads and give them a thorough check once a week. Is it because they hear us or are they just demanding!?! Sometimes it is so loud I have to shut the spare bedroom door!

I love my piggies but I sometimes they drive you around the bend with their wheeking!:))

No they just like trying their luck :p My cousin had a guinea pig that was called Squeaky for the very reason that he used to shout for food all the time. When he went to stay with another auntie of ours she responded to his shouting with food every single time needless to say he had to go on a diet after his holiday.

They begin to associate rustling bags with food etc or last night after been out most of the day I came home and said "Hello" to my mum and dad and they went "SHE'S BACK SHE'S BACK, FEED US"

If you only want them to shout when its actually tea time you can "train" them. A piggie I used to have knew it was tea time because I'd say "PIGGA PIGGA PIGGA" and because I said it every time I would feed him he'd shout. :)

Thanks for your reply... I thought it may be because of that but I was not sure!

My white piggie is quite quiet, it is just my black one! He is terrible and is constantly wheeking - especially with my husbands voice!

mine are always hungry, luigi wheeks every time I walk past. greedy pig :))

I'd be inclined to say that guinea pigs are never hungry - as they have to eat constantly because they have to keep their gut moving. As for wheeking - they just want some yummy goodies, they know it's irresistable!

Mine seem to always be hungry! they get fed veg twice a day, dried mix in the evening plus piles of hay. They also sometimes get extra dandelion leaves picked from the garden but they always seem to be interested in more! :)

In my experience, piggies are fur wrapped black holes with a big wheek attached emitting a stream of never ending poos...

They need to eat regularly to keep the guts going, so they have a rhythm of munching and sleeping. But there are some dramatic souls that will try to convince you that they are starving Oliver Twists 10 minutes after the last meal! Or as my hub says - once food has been eaten, it's GONE!

Minhe all think they are! they get new dried food in the evening and veggies in the morning and grass when they are out in the enclosure!

lol i do this to they know "DO YOU WANT NOM NOMS" means food and shout there heads off. They do still try there luck though when they hear the fridge opening!

guinea pigs are very much so like horses, they have to eat often to enable a good gut function.
