Hamster balls are for hamsters and ferret leads are for ferrets and not for guinea pigs! Both can damage the much more infelxible guinea pig spine and at the worst cause death.

Yeesh, thank goodness I don't do that, but my friend does, so I'll tell him immediately.

No, they aren't safe- they can damage a guinea pig's spine. I also always wondered why you would want to put a guinea pig in a ball- I used to let my mice run around in the ball because they were too easy to lose and too fast to catch, but a guinea pig is large enough not to get into impossible places so can have floor time with supervision safely on their own.
