Hello,
Suppose I should explain the slightly cryptic title. I’m not sure if I’ve just been really unlucky, or if finding healthy guinea pigs is truly difficult?
I rescued 2 guinea pigs a few years ago. (Had them all my life with my parents but these were my first as an “adult”)
In less than a year, rapid weight loss and a guinea pig specialist diagnosed Poppy with Ovarian Cysts. She made it through the Ovariectomy and looked set to recover. She didn’t. We lost her. We then bought Dorothy on a whim from Pets and Home to keep Mildred company. 6 months later Mildred developed a thyroid lump. While in the vets waiting for an op, she died of a heart attack. Heartbroken and with a lonely pig. we heard of a friend of a friend that had had an accidental litter. Cue Maude. Maude is now 1.5 years old, she has had bloat and a cold in that time although thankfully healthy now. With Dorothy now 2 and being the only Guinea with no health issues we decided to use Pets at Home again and increased to 4. So we added Agatha and Morag. All 4 hit it off immediately and we had 3 months of pure joy as they skipped around. Then yesterday, Morag took ill, very suddenly. She was squeaking and eating her breakfast. By lunch she couldn’t breath properly. Emergency vet visit, suggested pneumonia (not piggy expert but no choice On a Sunday). She had a baytril injection and we syringed her critical care every few hours through the night. Was at my piggy expert the second they opened. They put her straight in an oxygen tank and an X-ray diagnosed fluid on the lungs and a heart issue causing it. She didn’t make it.

We are heartbroken once again, but thankfully haven’t a lonely piggy.

My girls live in the house, they have constant hay, I open the door of their 9 x 2 C&C every day for them to run round the whole downstairs. They follow us everywhere, know where the fridge is. They have veggies, I make sure they have plenty vitamins. I dote on them. They are my children.

I guess I’m just a little broken. Am I doing something wrong? Or do we just have terrible luck? Are some breeds of guinea pig healthier than others? Say in the future, where would I find a healthy piggie? My heart can’t take loving them for such a short time.

Thank you if you’ve made it this far.

Sorry for your sudden loss of Morag 😔 Sounds like she had a genetic problem with her heart perhaps? I've heard it said if they make it to 2, they'll probably make it to 4, but earlier than 2, congenital things can be a problem for some..

I’m so sorry for your losses :( I’m afraid it really is luck of the draw. I went through a bad patch in 2013 where I lost 3 piggies within the space of a few months, 2 of those losses were just 10 days apart. I then went through another bad patch in 2015 where I had illness after illness and lost two piggies towards the end of the year. Thankfully (and touch wood) apart from a couple of lumps which have been confirmed as harmless cysts and fatty lumps, my current 4 piggies are the picture of health and Edward has just celebrated his 6th birthday this month. It sounds like you’ve just been incredibly unlucky

Thank you. Yes I think it must have been genetic. She was so young. I sincerely hope that’s the case as Dorothy is 2.5 now. I honestly worry so much about anything happening to her.

Oh bless you how awful. To lose them so close 😓
Thank you. I hope so. I’m constantly obsessing over their weight, diet, health. I once took Maude to the vet because she sneezed. 🤦‍♀️

Thank you. There really is nothing wrong with being extra cautious. I once took a pair of pigs to the vets thinking they had mites but there was nothing wrong with them

Aw you're looking after them well if you took Maude to the vet with a sneeze 😊
I have 4 new piggies after a spell of losses and I do worry about them, hopefully it goes in cycles and there's time to relax and enjoy.

My word. I am so sorry to hear about all of your trials and tribulations. Truly disheartening.

I offer sympathy and cannot offer anything else as my boys are only 2 months in my care.

What I can say is their diet, weekly checks (weight and physical appearance), routine vet appointments and constant companionship will ensure a good life for them. Again sorry for all of your loses.

I'm so sorry for your losses 😔
You are doing everything right, and your piggies have amazing lives. It really can be luck of the draw. My girl Rosie passed away at just 4.5 after suffering what we believe to be a stroke, while her daughter Violet lived to be 8, and had no serious issues until about 6.5 when she developed arthritis.
Sleep tight little ones 💕🌈

I’m so sorry for your losses. As with humans it can be luck of the draw in terms of genetics. I’ve had many piggies who’ve passed young for different reasons but in the rescue I’ve seen plenty of older piggies come in to the rescue in rude health and who have lived long lives. It’s gutting when you’ve done everything right in terms of their care but still lose them when they are youngsters, but please don’t blame yourself in any way.

I can so sympathise. I genuinely hope your remaining pigglies enjoy good health for many years. With no wish to be cynical, I have sadly found over the years of being a piggy mummy, I am yet to have one that hasn't had health issues of some description. I think it's due to indiscriminate breeding. I was lamenting my luck of being a poorly pig magnet recently, and have to recall it's part of the deal sometimes!
The important part is to remember how much joy they bring when they're well. It's hard sometimes, and I have decided myself my three are likely my last.
But please enjoy them when you can, and don't worry about what might happen, if you can! I've had so many frantic moments over the years. One day at a time, and massive condolences for your loss. Hugs 🫂

I'm so sorry for your losses, I've found myself wondering the same at times! Luckily I do have a few healthy pigs *touches wood* but it got to the point I just went with it, now I only take in special needs or neglected ones, at least issues no longer come out of the blue with most of them.
I do think unchecked backyard or mass breeding for pet stores has a lot to answer for, when you repeatedly breed from sickly and unhealthy animals, you will eventually weaken the gene pool. But it seems to be mostly down to luck in my experience.

Back in the day I kept pigs singly because I didn't understand dominance behaviours, they had small cages, were fed museli etc and only went to the vet if my parents allowed it, yet the little lived between 7 and 11 years old!

Now they have their own room, an excellent vet who I've spent more time with the last 2 years than my own friends and family with how often I've had to make appointments 🤣 the best food, enrichment, herds and reasonably well thought out groupings to match personality types to reduce stress..and nope! They all want to keep trying to die and the oldest I seem to be able to get them at the moment is about 5!

I hope you start having better luck soon ❤

I'm so sorry for your loss. :( It's never easy. Honestly, I feel like we've had pigs who never needed a vet visit there whole lives, but we have also had pigs with chronic and ongoing health issues. It seems to be the luck of the draw. We lost one before age two due to a severe dental infection (and we did switch vets after that, as I feel like it could have been handled a lot better in retrospect but at the time I really didn't know any better.) We also had a pig who had chronic bladder and dental issues but still lived to be almost 7 with vet care. We had two live to be about 6.5 years with very minimal issues. Right now we have Leela who is turning 5, but we've been told that she has enlarged kidneys about a year ago so we're frankly just happy that she's still here, and a baby where it's really too soon to tell. I think, like humans, a lot is down to genetics and just plain luck.

I am so sorry for your losses. :( It is certainly not your fault, you are doing nothing wrong. In fact, you are doing more than most!

I've lost 2 piggies so far, at different times, but both got ill out of nowhere, suddenly. One had bloat then developed Gastric Stasis. Another bloated but I believe it was also old age, as after the bloat passed, she went quickly. We do all we can for these little critters, but we have to remember how fragile they are. We have to cherish every moment we have with them, because you never know when it can take a turn.

Hugs to you, I know it is not easy.
