Are His Teeth Too Long?

Thank you!

From what I can tell, it seems to just be a front teeth issue, thankfully. He is using his waterbottle much better than before (it's not leaking because Oreo just got 3 brand new glass bottles) and I'm seeing him eat more. I haven't seen him spit much food out, apart from nuggets. Everything else is going down.

Hope your appointment with Simon goes ok today (saw you mention it on another thread).

Oreo didn't end up having a teeth trim but he was monitored all day. They decided not to because they saw the way he was coping with vegetables and hay. Thank you anyway for all the good luck.

Tonight, I am more concerned. He won't close his mouth properly, although he is still eating and maintaining a good weight. His teeth do look very long.

My vets have said they don't want to do a check up for another two weeks and the vet he's been seeing is going away in a few days for around two weeks so I have booked an appointment at The Cat and Rabbit clinic for him. I can't complain to my vets or anything because I am a regular volunteer there, and I know all the vets. I don't know which vet I am seeing, as I did it online (and got a great time slot), but I did ask to see Simon Maddock in the notes section. It is 4:30pm on Monday. Fingers crossed he's ok until then.

I'd rather wait until Monday to take him there rather than the RVC, which will be expensive. Hopefully it can just be a conscious dental there and then. I don't want Oreo to have anaesthetic unless it's completely necessary. My dad is taking him but I will have to miss my last lesson at school to go with.

Please wish him luck that he's ok until then and that they are able to do his dental then.

Just seen this, it will most likely be Simon that you see if it is an afternoon appointment, but if it is Kim, she is just as good as Simon with dental stuff.

Ok thank you.

I will be getting Oreo's carrier ready in about an hour and a bit. I'll be taking his heat pad as my dad loves having the car cold.

He's still eating, but definitely struggling a bit. He's eaten less today than normal, but then I'm not normally home with him. He's also been grazing on a bit of hay, but not enough. Oreo is really keeping his mouth open, poor baby. It must really hurt him.

Funny thing is he was more keen on his carrot than rainbow chard this morning.

So we ended up seeing Simon, as we were hoping.

Oreo was a very good boy, throughout, and he had a thorough examination. Oreo's front teeth were slightly too long and pointy, so he had those trimmed. Simon also had a good look at his back teeth (I wasn't there for the dental). Nothing too bad, apparently. Oreo's back teeth had some very small spurs but luckily no trapped tongue so he just had those filed. It seems Oreo has very mild dental disease, just from his lack of eating since there didn't seem to be any sign of an abscess. In addition, he no longer has bloat or gut stasis :).

I have been prescribed Metacam 0.2ml twice a day, not sure for how long as I forgot to ask.

Oreo's teeth are a million times better, he's like a new boar. He's been eating a lot more, which is a good sign. He hasn't been doing too well with veggies, he still thinks he has long teeth and doesn't need to bite too hard, so he ends up eating the fleshier parts :mal:. Hay is fine though, it's like watching a cute, fluffy hoover.

Oreo may need a follow up appointment in a few weeks, but it depends on his teeth and if they will overgrow or if he will just keep them at the same length. I can't go back too often as it is an hour to an hour and a half journey one way.

Thank you so much for the update, and I am so happy for you and Oreo that everything is sorted now. :yahoo:
Well done for getting the absolute best care possible for your boy - fingers crossed if he keeps eating properly that will be the end of it!

That's great news :) I wouldn't worry too much about the quantity of veg, hay is far more important & make sure you change it several times a day if possible, to encourage him to eat it. There may be a pain issue elsewhere which impairs on his eating, Metacam is anti-inflammatory so should help him be more comfortable in the long run if he has any discomfort like arthritis etc in his body :)

Thank you, I hope it's the end of health problems for him.

I don't think he's in any pain, I've haven't seen him this happy in a while :).
