Hello,

My boys are 15 weeks old on Christmas day and was just wondering for their age if they are too fat/thin...Ludo is bigger built than Hogs anyway and I know he is going to be a chunk! :(|)

Here are their December weigh ins...

2/12/09
Hogs - 609g
Ludo - 697g

5/12/09
Hogs - 644g
Ludo - 707g

13/12/09
Hogs - 660g
Ludo - 719g

21/12/09
Hogs - 713g
Ludo - 776g

Your boys look good! About 20-50g is normal for a week at that age; it can vary a little bit, depending on how much and how long before they have eaten.

It will slow down the closer they get to one year (piggies usually stop growing from around 9 -15 months).

I do weigh about every two weeks as long as my piggies have the "right" individual heft when I pick them up for cuddling/grooming. If I suspect a problem, they get weighed immediately and daily or weekly until I'm satisfied that they are OK and stable again. But most of my piggies are adult and have a stable regular weight.

Thanks!

They are a nightmare to weigh, especially Ludo. I use digital scales and Ludo always sneakily lifts a front paw off, I have to keep putting it back on, think he has a complex that he is heavier than Hoggle and wants to appear lighter! :(|)

I found that putting a rag or some kitchen paper in the bowl, and if necessary a hankie over them, calms them down. Of course, you have to recalibrate the scales to allow for that.

Unfortunately my scales are like a platform so I really have to be quick with them! I can get them settled and let go for about 2 or 3 seconds then they are off but I do not give up until I am certain it is accurate because they run off it a few times, they should learn if they keep still it is over quicker but they still haven't grasped that yet! rolleyes

Just weighed them again and Hoggle has gone from 713g to 721g since 21st and Ludo has gone from 776g to 787g.

If anyone is interested. ;):(|)

There is a lot of differing opinions on weighing regularly, but I have weighed weekly for the past 3-4 years and it's a habit that both I - and most important the pigs - are used to. It's very worthwhile weighing once a week, or at least once a fortnight, in my opinion.

P.S. Happy 15-week birthday to the boys yesterday. :))

Ah thank you! :(|)

I think it is a good idea to log it here because I don't have a clue what is right or wrong when it comes to weight, so if anything was amiss, hopefully someone would know!

As long as the weight keeps going up! My little chunksters! :<>

Your boys are sounding very normal in weight and weight gain!

It's always amazing how big they are when they are grown! rolleyes

Oops, I have forgotten to weigh them last week! I have just done them now and Hoggle weighs in at 748g from 738g and Ludo 828g from 798g. Hoggle hasn't put much on has he? :(

I know I am probably annoying you with this but their weights are confusing me - Hoggle is putting on more and catching up with Ludo even though he looks and feels tiny compared to him. I don't understand.

Hoggle is now 843g from 813g last week and Ludo is now 868g from 853g.

Can anyone shed any light or is Hoggle just naturally built smaller? You can definately feel the difference when picking them up though, I would expect Hoggle to be a lot lighter than him.

I think Hoggle is just built smaller hun. Not all guinea's can be the same built and weight. Its like people. We come in all different size, shapes and colours! As long as he's got a steady weight that doesn't drop by much, then I don't think you have anything to worry about.

If his weight did drop by a lot, say 3 or 4 ounces, then get him to the vets.

Fatty bum bums! :(|)

Hoggle is now 898g from 813g and Ludo is now 907g from 853g. :o

I want them to hit the 1000g mark, I love chunky pigs! :(|)

I just think it is so odd that Hoggle is so tiny looking compared to Ludo but they practically weigh the same! I even lifted them up and down in each hand simultaneously comparing their weights and they really are so similar - they hate me! They had a serious moan when I put them back down! :(|)

I have to weigh them about 3 times each, they can't get their head around the fact the sooner they keep still, the sooner they can go back to bed! :(|)

Cariad is now a healthy 950g from being 730g on arrival at the end of October.

Hoggle has still a little bit of catching up to do... Let's see who's hitting the big K first? ;)

when i get my new scale i'll be able to compare weights! maybe we could have some competition for chunkiest pigs! LOL..or guess the weight of the piggy as a game LOL hhaaha I'm so excited - it's kind of sad :))

they hate me! They had a serious moan when I put them back down! :(|)

Just a tip... you mentioned your scales being platform ones... mosts peoples are platform ones... you just need to put on a container (I use a large tupaware tub) on the platform and reset the scale to Zero... then put the pig in ...

...hey presto... no run-away pigs :))

I definately need new scales! :))

I struggled to weigh them tonight after such a long time but these are their new weights...

Hoggle: 1062g
Ludo: 1052g
