Hi. My two male guinea pigs don’t come out of their hiding spot a lot. They more but now they’re usually hiding. Also, they usually come out when I’m around.

Piggies are crepuscular they are going to be more active during dawn and dusk. During the day they will rest with periods of foraging through hay.

They are not likely to be sad though if you are providing them with lots to do. Plus as they have each other they will spend a lot of time interacting with each other even l if you don’t see it. A lot of communication is via scent and body language - so things which you can’t or may not be able to pick up on.

How old are they?

I’ve just seen that you have had them for only a month. They are likely to still be settling in.

Do you try to hand feed them their veg? That is a great way to bond with them.

Do they have a big enough cage? Two boars need a cage measuring 180x60cm

Do they have lots of enrichment in the cage?
Lots of piles of hay, tunnels and cardboard boxes with two doors cut in are great fun for piggies. Make sure you don’t use hides which only have one door.

My guinea pigs are six or seven months old. They have toys and tunnels. I hand feed them their vegetables. I don’t usually hand feed all the vegetables but sometimes I do. Their tunnel is cardboard and they like to chew on it. I also give them infinite hay.

They don’t need toys as such, they like lots of tunnels and hides.

What are the measurements of their cage? That is very important to boars - they need a lot of space

Thanks for your help

That’s an excellent size for two boars.

If you do expand the cage then make sure you rub all bedding with soiled bedding to transfer smells into the new section.
Changing cage size will be seen as a new environment and can cause a new round of dominance. Making sure they still recognise any new space as still their territory can help minimise issues
