We have a shed that is heated in the day when we’re home to supervise with an oil filled radiator that was new this year. It works really well. I have been switching off at night and using heat pads only at night but the shed still can get pretty chilly by the time I wake up. Those of you who use an oil filled radiator, do you leave it on overnight? I am just petrified of fire 😩 but also need them to be warm!

They are usually good because of the thermostat, but it also depends on the electrics of the shed and whether there are long cables from mains sockets. It might be better to increase the insulation with safe materials. Heaters use a lot of power and can place the system under pressure.

When my pet palace was fully inhabited, my oil filled radiator was on 24/7 during the winter. In fact, the shed was warmer than my house! 😁

I have indoor piggies so I’m not much help but I’m sure forum members who house their piggies in a shed will be along to advise. Ensure that any electrical wires to your shed are safe from rats/mice chewing them.
If you have a separate electrical circuit then it would trip if there was an issue .
Heat pads and lots and lots of hay will help

I have skinny pigs and even though they are indoors, i leave an oil filled radiator on all night in their room (cheaper than heating the whole house during the night). If your radiator has a thermostat it should be safe enough to leave it on.

Hello @YvonneBlue I have a single skinny pig Freddy who lives with furry friend Geoff in an c&c and I wondered what is the best room temperature for a skinny pig during the Winter.
Geoff is nearly 6 and has a bit of arthritis so warmth does help him too
I’m buying an oil filled radiator for them to maintain a good temperature for them and so I can reduce my heating being on all night
I’d really appreciate your advice …..thank you

I use an oil filled radiator in my living room of an evening whilst watching TV, it keeps the room lovely and warm and is far cheaper than my central heating. 👍

I don't know if this is any use to you @Roselina or @machuandpicchumummy , but when I had my 3 in a hutch in our outbuilding I used a plug in thermostat with a remote sensor to control my oil filled radiator. The sensor was in the Hutch so once it was warm enough in there, power to the heater was switched off, then it came on again when the temperature dropped below the set minimum .
I'm sure it saved at least some money, especially at the start and end of the cold weather season.

This was the one I had: https://lowenergysupermarket.com/pr...aCSo4A7WiTLUlTgrR_5ldsPbKlDq-kawUy6B_Tt-RMjgu

Thank you I think that’s really useful with an oil filled radiator

I have used one for many years in their shed. I use a remote thermostat on the plug which I find a lot more accurate and efficient. I couldn’t be without them! I do make sure they are kept clean and that there is no hay or other material around the base.

This is the thermostat I use Amazon.co.uk

Sorry I'm so late responding to this. Back at work and also have a poorly piggy.
We keep the piggy room around 19 or 20C all night. We find if we set the thermostat on the heater at 20C this means it turns on when it gets just below this temperature. Worth getting a digital thermometer to keep in the room, they usually have a function to check the highest/lowest temperature.

Oh I’m sorry you have a poorly piggy hope piggy gets better asap - thank you for the info
The room is quite good and is usually about 19-20C at night but I got an oil filled radiator to help
I do have a digital thermometer and it’s an egg one that goes red if too hot , orange for just right , colourless if below and icy blue if very cold !

Sadly, Val (one my skinny pigs) has been diagnosed with a thickened heart valve. This is genetic due to inbreeding. We lost her sister early last year to the same thing. I have just found out from the rescue that rehomed them that both their siblings (brothers) died last year too. She will only be 3 years old in February.

Oh I’m so sorry to hear that @YvonneBlue
She has a lovely home with you which is all she could ask for.
I hope she has many many days
