Hi Everyone,

I read somewhere that piggies were omnivorous, and I was wondering if anyone else had heard this? Not that I was thinking of giving my piggies a big steak or anything was just curious if this was the case?!

Omnivorous?

not to my knowledge. every where i have read guinea pigs are herbivories apart from the odd nibble of fingers they only eat fruit and veggies.
this is the domesticated piggies as to the wild ones i can't say, hoping you get the answer you seek. good luckxx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

Thanks :)

Yeah I have read in so many places that they only eat veggies, apart from the odd nibble of a finger like you said rolleyes But it was actually in one of those leaflets they usually have in vets, the care sheets, which I found a bit strange. Possibly it was talking about when guineas were wild then?

Herbivores me thinks. :) Don't thick their gut would cope with meat. :)

I will have to see if I can a copy of this leaflet then and see who wrote it then, would be interesting to see who produced it!

Erm, they don't eat meat at all! Maybe they're talking about the fact they drink their mother's milk or maybe they eat small insects like ants in the wild? Definatly DO NOT give your pet any meat, poultry or dairy product!

Just want to say I am definately NOT thinking about giving my piggies meat, I am just curious as to why it said it on the website, thats all. But nevermind.

I would think either someone has been mis-informed or a poss typo or maybe there is actually some written proof out there.

The only "meat" i have know them to possibly ingest is the bits of ear that they've nipped off a cage-mate/s or when a piggy has passed they have been known to nibble at the piggy in order to make it get up & move,; which has been mistaken for cannibalism by some.

When i was younger one of my piggies was in the run and munching on something weird looking. I walked over and she was eating a slug! She'd eaten like half of it before i saw it and took it off her! @)

Just to assure i'd never feed my piggies meat etc...not even a slug lol!

Goes to show what Supreme petfoods know about guinea pigs. It's completely wrong. They are not omnivores they are herbivores. Wild cavies (which are not the same as the ones we keep as pets) are also herbivores and graze for food. They don't eat insects, either.

HAMSTERS are omnivores!
