just out of curiosity, are rescue sows, from rspca etc usualy done, or it is mainly only the males that are nutered?

It's mainly just the males, if they're paired with females. But some places spay the females. It's meant to be really hard to find a spayed female though, cos it's a much riskier operation.

no, guinea pigs are not routinely neutered, for boys it's only done if their only chance of companionship is a sow (ie they fight with other boars, even babies) and for sows only if they need it to survive ovarian cycsts and some other conditions. That said I know of one UK rescue that "does" all guinea pigs, but it's definitely not common.

thanks for that guys, just i was thinking futuristicly of pairing my boys up with a small group of females each. as i dont think its possible for the 2 males to go together with females is it. would one male each wit h2 females work best? and so is it best for me to get my boys done rather than tryin to track down rescued sows that are already done?

no, unfortunately your now friendly boars will not happily share sows...

If you want a mixed group you should find a very experienced vet in your area and neuter your boys, or just keep the two of them as a happy bachelor pair and get a neutered boar already done from a rescue to put sows in with.

i thoguht of that but wondered if i had the 2 males in one cage, and nxt to the had 1 male with 2 sows, wouldnt the 2 males fight being in such close quaters to the females?

I think that depends on how closely bonded your boars are and their personalities. I know many who keep boar pair and mixed groups in the same room, but you might not want to put them so that they can say hi through the bars to begin with.

Sometimes the males will go mad if there are females in the next cage. Mine don't, but from what I've read on here I'd guess that they females usually cause friction between the males.

Mine got a bit dominant with each other when they first were near females, but now when they see the girls they just all run over and squeak at them and all stare at them, cos they're so pretty I assume! :))

i may consider that in the future, i have a c& c on the way delivery date 9th of sept, so excited. i might just see how i can lay my room out so they might b ok. then id like to rehome some needy ladies lol

Sorry if you have said this somewhere else but are your boys having problems? Is that why you want to split them up or do you just want girls too?

they bicker but its nothink to major yet but they are only 7 weeks, so I'm hoping they will get over it. i would just like more piggies in future, n would like to have a larger group, so thats why i thought maybe putting them with females each, n having them in c&c cages next to each other. as i duno if i put them 2 next to a group of females they would moan lol
