I wondered if there were different kinds of fur on rexes cos I have two, Molly (2) who is quite rough and always brings my neck and chest up in a rash and Rosie (7 wks) who is much softer. Obviously a baby is going to be softer, but she even feels softer than Molly when she was tiny and Molly has always brought me up in a rash but Rosie doesn't (thank goodness, she lives under my hair! ;D)

The Rex is a rough coated guinea pig. The coat has no guard hairs, which gives it a woolly texture. The coat is dense, and the hairs are no longer than 1cm, and stands directly out from the body, giving it a ‘hedgehog-like’ appearance. The Rex has a broad head and large droopy ears. The underbelly is dense and curly.

The Teddy's hair is short, dense, and they have an even coat, which is unique in having a "kinked" or bent hair shaft, which causes the coat to stand erect over the entire body of the cavy. The coat is to demonstrate "resiliency" - that is, it should return to an even, upright appearance immediately after it is disturbed. The Teddy should have a medium length body and a Roman nose.

Teddies are the usual size, Rex are a bit bigger.

As CC says the 2 are completely different breeds with different genetic make up.In purebreds the sows have softer coats than boars (usually!). Bathing a Rex (or any pig) makes the coat softer. If they are cross breeds then its likely to be something else in the background... :) So, a Rex isn't another name for a Teddy :) and yes on p/breds its different :)

my 2 baby rex sows have a flat coat despite both mum and dad being rexes maybe as they get older it will get more like their parents coat,

:) So much info! Thanks so much!

I thought that a Rex was another name for a Teddy, had no idea the two were different! I think this explains it.

I believe Molly is a Rex and Rosie is a Teddy. Her hair is frizzier. And Molly is definitely more hedgehog like.

I am so grateful for the info! :smitten:

a bit like swiss cheese only in a teddy shape, lol
( sorry silly mood again)
Ill have to go get my teddy out and make him pose

Haven't heard of those, what are they like then? :)

CH or Swiss Teddies are a rough haired breed of guinea-pig. Their hair is thick and regular, the length is + 6 cm, and rough cast on all the body. The hair on the stomach is curled. With CH-teddy
younger than 5 months, the hair can be shorter. CH-teddy has a solid built body with broad shoulders. The head is large, none pointed, with eyes well placed. The eyes are large and bright. The ears have to be hanging, well formed and large. Really attractive breed and very hard to get hold of. ;)

You can get a Satin anything LOL! Challenge you to name an unsatinised variety (not including Baldwin and Skinny).

Martens and Sables are the only ones I haven't seen satinised... I think

Sorry, there are Satin Rexes, and a couple of months ago there was a big rescue of Satins including Rexes. Not many about though, :)

Really, well I didn't know that and I know my breeds. Have never heard or seen a Satin Rex. You learn something new everyday. :o

I admit that I've never seen one being shown but have seen Satin Teds being shown and pigtures of Swiss Satins...

yes i have satin rex's , one from the rescue & 3 others,my rex's also have guard hairs? so perhaps I'm doing something wrong ?
also a teddie's fur forms a 'peak' at the front almost like a fringe , or thats how i tell mine apart !
i have 16 rex, 4 satin rex & 8 teddies :smitten: there loverly

have put pics in gallery , tho not sure that helps ? also ment to say rex have guard hairs , teddies dont, but i was having a blonde day in my earlier post !

Guard hairs are the longer coarse outer hair that forms a protective layer over the softer underfur. O0

from the pics i wud say yes they are teddies, teddies fur is much denser & softer than a rex, but then i have a rex x texel who has really dense , squidgy fur !
it is really really hard to tell them apart , i know exp breeders who struggle sometimes, & I'm certainly no expert, but a very reputable (as in has won shows etc) breeder i got one of mine from told me if you brush its hair from bum to head (as you should with both teds n rex) the teddies fur comes to almost a peak or fringe on its head , the rex dont, but then as i say i have a rex x who could be mistaken for a ted at first glance ! ?
also if you breed a rex to ted you get a smooth coat baby. so there are definate differences !

Of course, on reading this I had to get both Molly and Rosie out of the run for a little hairbrushing session! Judging by the peak/fringe, I've got a couple of teddies! ;D
