Are these good for my guinea pigs? They are called selective naturals? Also, do they have a low calcium content? One of my pigs has a sludge problem and cystitis! Also... has anyone heard of fitch bedding? It’s made out of paper... is this ok for my piggies?xx

Nugget Comparison Chart
I have linked in the pellet chart for you , my piggys love those pellets, they are the only grain free version accepted by all six!
I don't know about fitch bedding, I've never used it but there is a bedding overview in the guides in the green bar above.

We have this brand here in the us as well and it's the best I've had for them. They do like them a lot and I feel a lot safer with these over the other brands that don't consider balance when mixing pellets with a lot of calcium. It's a bit higher here but again, I don't overfeed and they tend to be good with what I give them (as vs other brands they were pretty inconsistent with each day).

My piggies love those pellets. 😉

I'm using fitch bedding for my piggies hutch. It's great and very absorbent. And since it's white, I can easily see as well if there's any discoloration with their wee (in case it's a sign of UTI and such).

Hi thanks everyone! Yep both of my girls have recently had utis- one of them it was sludge and she almost needed a bladder flush-so I don't know what I would've done otherwise! Ok.. now onto diet:
Unlimited hay- I fill it up 3 times a day
Unlimited water (obviously)
A very tiny handful of pellets, once a day
2 slices of cucumber each a day
lots of fresh grass, once a day, but big amounts.
Sometimes they get green beans and broccoli stalks, or green lettuce.

Rexy has awful problems with absorbing calcium, so I have to be very careful on what veg I feed them as she gets gritty pee very easily. is this an ok diet? are they getting enough vitamin c? I think I might consider getting the oxbow daily C tablets... are these found to be any good?

Oh ok... will tell my mum to get some next time she goes to the supermarket! They mainly get fresh grass now instead of veg.... does fresh grass contain enough vit c?

i’m not sure about grass, the peppers area good idea and maybe try kale if you can get some? that is full of vitamin c

With reference to grass being fed every day. I think this may be highly contributing to sludge/UTIs as grass has abundance of calcium. I would probably seriously cut down on grass and replace with other veg...such as lettuce (no to iceberg and I have seen on forums that romaine has been linked to increased sludge in urine), courgettes, cucumber, radicchio, chicory are one of power in calcium... plenty of water, maybe worth giving dandelion leaves 2-3 times a weeks ( not a huge amount) as they act as diuretic and he’ll flash excess calcium etc. Xx

The pellets seem to have a reasonable amount of calcium iodate howeve what would worry me is thee excessive amount of soya in various forms used in these pellets.
I had a look at composition as well and it also day these may contain genetically modified soya on top of that...
personally I’d stay away from these and any pellets that have so mug soya and molasses and any other sweet additions. :(

😮. Have been feeding them lots of grass but will cut down on that! Any other veg you would recommend that would be good for her? I have ordered these sherwood pet health pellets from their website. They are imported from the USA and quite expensive, but from the reviews it definitely looks worth it! They are made from 50% Timothy and 50% alfalfa, which really surprised me as alfalfa is very high in calcium- so I emailed dr. Sherwood and he explained that it’s usually carbonate that causes sludge/ stones and calcium does actually not effect it?! Not sure. The soya in the pellets I have at the moment definitely concern me though....

I think if you google vegetables with lower calcium content you’ll see what’s on there. I don’t think it’s feasible to cut down calcium full stop from their diet, because they do need for it healthy bones and teeth etc... I think all in moderation and also variety is enough key. I don’t think there’s any veg available in uk that my pigs don’t eat... peppers, kale ( not too often, couple times a fortnight) parsnips, parsley, dill, coriander ( like with all herbs feed spring and occasionally as high in calcium), celery, aubergine, butternut squash, beetroot (makes pee redish :)) lettuces ( they love bulova lettuce - the one with red leaves and curly lettuce), chicory ..
We give them strawberry leaves as well sometimes at the end of strawberry season, there’s plethora of veg they can eat it...
the only thing I cannot find on shop shelves in UK is radicchio :hb: not idea why but it can only be found in the ‘ ready bagged mixed salads’ and I’m trying to avoid plastic packaging plus they’re not most cost effective ...
Sherwood pellets is something I’d love to buy. Abby from skinnypigs1 in Canada was in conversation with sherwood about potential supply in UK. How much did you pay if I may ask? Last time I checked and added it all up it game to some £90 incl customs etc 😱😱😱
Have a look at JR FARM pellets , they are available at zooplus... they one of best available in uk I’d day. They’re grainfree and have simple and transparent ingredients. Another good brand is Bunny dream but we chose JR FARM as they do 15kg bags whcih works better for our 7 pigs x

They’re on the sherwood health website- last time I checked it was free delivery to the the uk! They are €17 I think. Which is about £14? And we’ve had a breakthrough- the pigs have started eating pepper!

Yes these are the JR Farm pellets... they do free delivery to UK? From America ? I gotta check this out... but customers are going to be a killer. Do you know when they’ll deliver? I’m so curious to know.

Great news on pepper... just keep introducing them to new foods... even if they won’t like them at start, just let a little bit in their cage or feed by hand. Some of my pigs like a bit of a fuss ... hehe... pepper is great for vitamin c

Right I just checked their website and are you sure you get free delivery as it seems unlikely and their website says that shipping outside of USA becomes expensive ...?

Yes that confused me as well.... but it said free delivery on the order confirmation. However they have just sent me an email asking me to pay more for shipping to the uk? The order hasn’t gone through yet anyways.... I am probably going to get the pellets of zooplus, as they look good!
