Hello,

New GP who's bottom teeth broke due to them being to long. Took her to the vets and they said she will be fine. Her bottom teeth have grown back really well but I'm worried her top teeth are now to long because of the missing bottom teeth. Will they correct themselves now that she's eating fine, or should I get them shortened at the vets?

They do look a bit long. I would get the vet to trim them a little and after that everything should sort itself out. It would also be worth looking into why the bottom teeth were so long in the first place. It may be a molar problem, so ask your vet to check them out, preferably without a general anaesthetic.

Thanks heaps. She has her teeth checked when I first for her a couple of months ago and they said they were fine. She's been chewing on plenty of things to keep them short. Apple branches etc... I might get a different vet to have a look

They don't look too long but they do look like they could do with a trim! I had a guinea pig who I took to get his teeth trimmed but "they didn't need it" and then soon enough one of his teeth fell off

Oh not sure think both my girls teeth are longer but they have never been treated for any dental Issues. Think I would get a second opinion from a different vet who can do conscious dentals &decide then.

But if they were mine I'd be tempted to leave as they are-I wouldn't want to mess up the top teeth too.
The bottom ones should grow back quite quickly anyway :)

Make sure they have lots of coarse hay &chewing toys, apple branches are good to help keep the teeth worn down nicely (good move :)) ).

Debbie at furryfriends would be one of the best members to ask but I'm not sure if she's still a bit busy at the moment. She was having a well deserved break :)

@Wiebke or @sport_billy any ideas if she's back yet?

I'll try &take a photo of mine later-just to double check for me really.
Hope your little furball is sorted quickly &speedy recovery xx

The top teeth look a bit long to me, too. Ideally, the front teeth are self-sharpening and don't need any trimming. I would have the molars checked again to make sure that all is ship-shape. The teeth are a very finely balanced system where one bit that is out of kilter can impinge on all the others in a very short time.
However, I am not a dental expert!

Unfortunately I didn't take time out for a break, it was because my full time, paid work was so busy. I could do with a break though lol

aww :( I did mean a break from the forum. But by the sounds of it u could do with some "me" time :) I didn't like to tag u in-just in case u were still manic... Well more so than usual ;)!

But we all appreciate your wealth of experience &especially your dental knowledge :)
You're amazing &dedicated-thankyou.

@Ellbell do the teeth top &bottom meet up correctly or are they now misaligned?
Xx

Her bottom teeth are just a little under half way of fully growing back. I think the length the top teeth have is because of the lack of bottom teeth so should sort themselves out now that shes chewing on hard things with no trouble.
I will keep a very close eye and if they start to grow and not shorten ill take her to the vets again.
This forum is SO helpful. I don't know what o would do without you guys sometimes. Stress to the MAX I think haha
