Hey!
The vets are having trouble ordering in Marys septrin paediatric syrup meaning they have had to replace it with a tablet form in which I have to crush a quarter of a tablet. It’s called Tribrissen 20g. I was just after some reassurance that it is safe and pretty much the same as the syrup but in tablet form?
Thanks in advance :)

Yes tribrissen and septrin are the same thing, and tribrissen is listed as safe for guinea pigs. As for the dividing and crushing a tablet thing vs a syrup, it will be trickier to get the correct dose, and it is supposed to taste very bitter... but the pharmacology aspects are fine :)

Thank you so much! I did look online but clearly I didn’t look very well lol

shame it’s going to taste bitter, Mary LOVED the syrup!
Do you think it’s okay to give with a little bit of critical care to make it taste better?

Yes I think as long as you are sure she's getting the full dose you can give it with some critical care or some fruit juice to hide the taste :)

I found it difficult to suck it all up off the spoon into the syringe, so I offered her the rest of it on the spoon and she almost licked it clean :))

To give tablets, I draw up some syringe food into the syringe, pop the tablet into the end of the syringe (some need to be broken in two, depending on size). I then syringe the food, plus tablet straight into the mouth. You can hear the piggy crunching it up! By doing it that way, you know they've had all the tablet.

Brilliant thank you!

I do this because you told me this trick before, it's funny when you hear it crunch on the molars. Works everytime. I was giving marbocyl tablets at the time.

Good idea! I'll have to remember that one.
