Are we doing everything right?

We bought 2 brothers yesterday (they're about 7 weeks old I think - couldn't hear what the lady said and haven't had chance to pop back and ask) from Pets At Home and I'm a little unsure if what we're doing is right.

We've got the boys (Mr Grimes and The Colonel) in a Nero 3 (don't have room for a 4 until I get change my computer desk which won't be until Christmas) and so far so good. We've had a little bit of squabbling with Mr Grimes chasing The Colonel out of the 'nest' area but they're sharing the food bowl and rest of the cage without any problems. From what we saw last night they're sleeping in the nest area at night at opposite ends so one under the stairs and one by the entrance. We bought a cardboard tunnel thing today so they can have shelter separately if needed.

They're being fed on the nuggets they had them on in the pet shop and supplemented with plenty of hay and so far some organic carrot (which they loved) and some organic strawberries (which they're not so sure on). The Colonel is going to be a fat little piggie very shortly the way he's going as he's constantly eating!

We've had them out yesterday evening for a cuddle and twice so far today - The Colonel seems to be very happy when he's out (lots of gentle chortling already and eating off our laps) but Mr Grimes is far too important to enjoy something as simple as a cuddle so he just sits there and ignores us! Not completely still through fear but not interested in interacting yet.

So, have we missed anything? We've got an outdoor run coming this weekend but we need to mow the lawn first or we'll lose them in the grass! Fingers crossed it doesn't rain tonight or tomorrow.

Welcome to the forum, you'll find that there is a wealth of information available for you on this forum.

Sounds like things are going well. Just give them time to settle in, a nero 4 would be a good idea at a later day. I have two boys in a Nero 3 but they are soon moving to a 4 as they are a bit cramped. The only thing I would advise is to start trying them with different types of fresh food, its vital that they have fresh fruit and veg day.

Take care and if you have anymore questions please free to ask

Hi Ms_Fi and welcome to the forum. Lots of information on here to help you.

Yes, give them time to settle into their new home. It will all be very strange to them at the moment, even if they were already sharing accommodation in the pet store.

Don't try to pick them up for a couple of days. Leave them alone ... although it will be hard for you. Then start introducing your hand just to gently stroke them. Let them see your hand coming and speak to them quietly to reassure them.

They will learn to trust you and soon they will be squeaking whenever they hear you approaching with their tea! :))

However, when you do pick them up ... just do a quick check of their "private areas" to make sure that they look the same, as pet stores have a habit of mis-sexing. That is what happened to me 17 years ago - I thought I had two boars but I had a boar and a sow and yes, you can guess what happened next! :)

All sounds good so far but we tend to prompt people to rescue guineas from the many rescue centres up and down the country :)

Having said that, you have your lovely boys now (yes do double check their bits) and dont mow the lawn just yet! ----they will love the long grass :))
