I swear to god, if I hear the words "it's only a guinea pig" one more time then I may not be responsible for my actions! I don't care who says it!

Just had a huge argument with the OH over Maggie because he thinks that "there's a sliding scale on what's appropriate to spend on an animal" and "where am I going to stop?"

He wants to think himself lucky he is currently 70 miles away!

Arghhhhh!

Oh no! Well you have my full support. She is worth every penny. How can people think a dog is more important because they are bigger! Guinea pigs are deserving of medical care when they are unwell. You are doing the right thing so do not let anybody upset you.

Sometimes people ask if I have pets and I say "Yes, four guinea pigs" they then reply "Oh no I meant real pets like cats and dogs"

Is a guinea pig less reliant on me? Less alive? Less deserving?

It drives me nuts. One of my Mum's friends didn't bat and eyelid at spending £2000 on her dog when it swallowed something it shouldn't but really raised eyebrows and pulled faces when I said how much I had spent on Bingo's treatment when he was ill (£400 if you were interested)

Grrr. Some people.

I told him that he'd better start thinking about how much his dog is worth because he's not getting any younger. Seemed to shut him up for a bit

Well said...

Right now he wants to be grateful there's a national health service! :Ayociexp120:

What a wally. I hate it so much when people have that attitude and in your OH it's unforgivable, it's him who needs to sort his priorities out not you. (((((hugs)))))

Men eh?
The moment they open their mouth they lose all brain activity...it just turns to mush and they are unable to string together a sentence that's not even worthy of an argument - it rarely even makes sense - It's like they do it on purpose, just to annoy mallethead

I totally sympathise - but I have to say I've had exactly the same said to me with larger animals "it was only a cat, you can get another one". It's the kind of comment I simply don't understand.

He totally should, I work for the NHS and it needs a complete start from scratch in my honest opinion.
Null & Void all PFI contracts,
Stop all people who are not from the EU & EU citizens without a EU health insurance card from using NHS Services. Force them to pay.
Make the person supply credit/debit card info up front or insurance & get them to prove they can have NHS services within 14 days or get charged.

Back to topic:

I have had people the same about my animals and that I have spent a lot of money caring for them when they have gotten sick.
I used the "Well if we did not have the NHS, you would pay for the care & medical provisions for yourself & someone you cared for"

It does shut them up

It annoys me when other people start moaning about it
ITS NOT THEIR ANIMAL
ITS NOT THEIR MONEY
ITS NOT CAUSING THEM ANY PROBLEMS
ITS NOT THEIR PROBLEM!

Agreed! It's unbelievably frustrating! When Jerry was having all his tests/xrays/scans and then his bladder op a member of my family asked why I was bothering when I could 'get a new one from P@H for £35'! :alJFBQ00152070115A:

Thats akin to saying that when we lost our son I could have the snip reversed and have another child as we were just young enough.

Animals are individuals and they are entitled to as good a life as possible.

(and yes I am a meat eater and am more than happy to pay extra for meat from animals that have been given a good life and give a silent thank you for the animals sacrifice.)

I'm currently fighting with the OH as I would like to adopt another piggy (I need even numbers in my gang ;)) he gave me the "when are you going to stop" line too. As above - it does't involve them, we care for them, pay for them, etc...tsssk!

Has he realised what he said was wrong or is he sticking to his guns?

I'm completely with you. It drives me potty! mallethead

'its only a guinea pig/rabbit/hamster etc', 'i could by a new one for the price ive paid' Well i got my cat for free! and i spend hundreds on him! FFS, i wish this nation didnt have such a throw away society. I could rant on and on.... grrrr

x.

My boyfriend has also said something similar and we aren't financially tied! Yet its different when he gives his money away to his family members who might as well light a match to it.

Just slap him with a wet kipper
