He always makes such a fuss during nail trimming time.
I've had my boys for 3 years now and have never had any issues cutting their nails...
I normally manage to cope with Arnolds constant biting, whining and wriggling during trimming time but tonight...He finally got the better of me...
Not only did he move at just the WRONG moment but he PULLED his foot at the same time and I took off almost half his nail!

He squealed...I cried...And then I saw the blood just come pouring out.
I managed to stop it with the "bar of soap" method I'd heard about but...I'm worried because I took off alot of his nail...This is a bit more than simply catching the quick...I properly cut it! 8...
It's HIS fault! But I'm the one who feels incredibly guilty because I hurt my baby boy.
I didn't feel anything at first, I just acted quickly, didn't panic and got him sorted and then cuddled him until I was sure the bleeding had stopped...

But now I'm pretty shaken and feeling like a bad mummy 8...

This is not your fault at all. He pulled and so he ended up hurt. Please do not blame yourself. Has he stopped bleeding now? This has happened to me before as my girls get really stressed and pull away too. I do not know if this is possible but maybe next time it would help if somebody could hold him for you. You are not a bad mum at all this is not your fault.

As far as I know. I'm going to check on him again in a minute but I held him for a good 10 minutes or so and when I dabbed his nail I didn't get any more blood from it.

Well if the bleeding has stopped all is fine. It is best to make sure it has stopped before you put him back.

Next time put his little foot into a cup of corn flour, corn flour is amazing in stopping blood. It will quickly clot it.

I did the same thing with my budgie, he was squirming around in my hand and he moved at the wrong time. I cut his quick and blood was coming out so quickly I panicked. Then I remember my vet saying use corn flour or any flour and try to block the area so it can all stop. It worked well.

Hope Arnold is ok? :) Bless him! x>>

Sorry, I also remembered that you can use a small amount of super glue on the nail and then add tissue. My vet says it is safe for most animals. I would personally use corn flour but the glue idea he used on my friends rat and once on my budgie.

Again, I don't know about guinea pigs but he used it on a rat....

These things can happen with uncooperative piggies; some have a talent for moving just at the wrong moment. Please check his toe for signs of infection in the coming days to be on the safe side.

I would never recommend this. It sounds dangerous to me.

Thank you. I wasn't sure if there was a chance it could get infected or not.
I will keep a very close eye on him.

Most of my piggies have had a nail cut that is too close to the skin. matilda is all black and her nails are a nitemare s you cant see where the nails ends. As such, I now always just take the ends off, and cut her more regularly than the others.....Matilda has a habbit of suddenly pulling the foot back as well. I think most piggie owners will have had a nail cutting accident as some time and as long as the bleeding has stopped the piggie should be fine. I'm not sure about eh super glue though..I would imagine it to be rather toxic, it certainly makes my eyes water........I just pressed on the nail for ages and it stopped......

Done it to my budgies and was no problem. It does not harm them in any way, all it does is closing the cut. You cannot use the glue on anything else apart from the nails. My vets are very very good.

However, I am not advicing to use it on guinea pigs as I havent heard or seen them do that to a guinea pig but have seen it on my budgies and friends rat.

Corn flour is best though! Stops the bleeding pretty quickly!

These things happen, it wasn't your fault, he should of been a good boy and sat still whilst his mummy did his nails

Aww it's not your fault, these things happen! Have you tried swaddling him with a towel? That way he can't wriggle as much and some piggies like it, as they feel secure.

Mine are actually awful about it. They squeal in agony the moment they spot the snippers! rolleyes When I took them to my vet she offered to do them and they started the awful crying squeaking in the vets. It was soo embarrassing, a vet nurse came to see what was wrong! :x But the vet managed better than I ever did so we just take them there for it now.

Actually I haven't and that could be a good plan! :o
I will try this next time, thank you.

I used to do it when I've had to give him medicine...I should have thought about doing it for trimming his nails, too. :{

He seems alright today. I had a look at his nail and there's some dry blood there but it looks fine and he's quite happy doing his usual "I'm the cutest trouble maker ever" routine.
